Get a Screeching Beagle air cleaner kit, or an Arlen Ness Big Sucker air cleaner kit.
If you do this all yourself, you'll also need a SERT or PCIII for the appropriate map for the ECM.

Stage I air cleaner and a Power Commander or Race tuner.

I would not buy an SE air cleaner, you want one that has a K&N filter so that you can wash it and reuse it. The SE is good for maybe one cleaning.
A SERT would be great if you are going to build it much, a PCIII is a good choice, too. Have the bike dynoed at a well respected tuner's shop and then only if he will release to custom map to you. You could need it again, you bought it, you own it.

One can buy the parts, with either a chrome or black powdercoat backing plate, then the K&N HD-0800, or a Big Sucker, or a Power Pakk, or....

OK, all you guys with overworked right wrists, be completely honest with cr.
While a PCIII, S.E.R.T. (Screaming Eagle Race Tuner), DTT or Thundermax may provide more flexibility to tinker along with the likelihood of a better end result, the only thing he must have after adding more air to his new pipes is the (albeit somewhat worthless) "Re-Flash" to the EMC.

That's true, Scabby, but you said it right, it's a worthless download, and a waste of money, he'd still have a lean-running, hot engine when they were done.
The money spent on that would go a long way toward a SERT or a Power Commander.

on the third reflash he would have paid for the SERT
IMHO it is money well spent

I made the re-flash mistake only once. I now have a SERT.

I lean towards the Power Commander III. A little less money and easier to setup and adjust, at least thats what those who have them say....

Unless you're going to go big bore, there's no need to waste money on a SERT or PC. A simple, inexpensive and easy to install, DFO will work fine. SLOWHOUND sells them.

That's what I'm using. Also went with the SE breather and replaced the element with a K&N.

that reflash is a piece of crap... don't waste the money that could be use to buy a bigger piece of crap... THE SERT.
If I had it to do over, I'd go with the Zippers ECM with NON proprietary Interface... maybe even the auto tune...

All the parts can be purchased individually, sans filter, then buy the K&N.
More cheaperer, and you don't have the pormetal finish on the backing plate, since you bought chrome or black.

The BBQ black paint sticks to the pormetal pretty good, and it was pretty cheap to do.

Take a look at the Doherty Air Cleaner, not real cheap, but it is worth it!

I think you are right Gray, $350 for a Mikuni, $300 for an ignition module, a few other parts. Less than a grand and you can actually tune it.
What does a Grand buy an EFI, a SERT and two tunes.

And that is why, a ride to FL to have the master do it once would, in the long run, save a lot of money.
I have changed the cam three times with my Mikuni, tuning only cost me $50 for the SE tuning kit with all the needles, pilot jets, main jets and gaskets in it.

If you do a search over at VTF, I believe there is a long thread on how to tune one that has been made a sticky. Lots of good info.
Here you go, no need to search.

There is also the Daytona Twin Tech which will also auto tune. Read about it here.

When in the higher elevations I can hear the the difference. But don't know if it would run any beter with FI.
My opnion, having never owned at FI, is that the problemis in lack of good tuners. Smeday FI will give you more control and easier tuning.

Learned that the SERT is mated to the ECM. If the ECM dies you need to buy a new SERT. BS. Everything brakes down. Why should I have to repalce $$ a good part too.
No sert for me, that is if I ever get a FI bike.

I was thinking about 07. But after reading all the FI this weekend, I am a little scared off. $$$. PCIII doesn't seem to bad, but if you want to keep the closed loop and go with auto tuner your talking 8-900. To rich for my blood. Don't know which is better open or closed loop.
May wait for used 07s, maybe get used 88 this winter and build it up, or maybe just buy new tomorrow.

Which models have cats in a particular year is in the big H-D University PDF that comes out at the first of every model year. I am not sufficiently motivated to look it up, but if you want to know, that's where you can find it.
The SERT is married to the VIN, but the dealer programs your VIN into the new ECU, so it's a non-issue. You can use the same SERT.
And '06 was the FIRST year of the PHASE-IN of the new EPA regs. That means it'll continue to get more oppressive until 2010, when the new regs are in full effect.

I am damn near positive some touring bikes in 06 had cats. Maybe sporties too, but not positive. Would make since they need to show % of sales are complient. They need the Vrod to do better.
