View Full Version : Rusting Rotors
Peaked under the cover today. Don't worry, the white walls are still clean. But the rotors are begining to show signs of rusting. I'm assuming the pads will not off some during my first ride after winter. But what about the other stuff? Wire brush? Any of you guys experience this also?

I think they are just trying to match your left pipe.... it stems from lack of use.

Garage damp? Gotta put some of those "do not eat" things that come with shoes all around the bike.Go to a harley dealer and get the ones that come with leather jackets or noew bikes... The surface rust will come off when ridden except the holes will have to be cleaned out manually.

does your cover have a vent, Rock?

Water doesn't come in, but I can see condensation occuring from the cars. I kinda figured that the holes would have to be cleaned manually. I can get something I saw in the hardware store. Kinda looks like steel wool on a stick. It should do the trick.

Yes it has vents. Issue probably is that fact that my cars are stored in the same garage. So condensation may form when the cars enter with a hot engine.

Rock you could spray some WD-40 on a rag and wipe it on the rusted area.should give it some protection.
are a full bike Condom will work...............
just sayin'

Not that I wouldn't take everything you say word-4-word. But something just doesn't sound right about spraying a lubricant on anything that deals with brakes. Could just be me...

Rock,
I wouldn't worry about it.
Won't you be riding in another 2-3 months up there? :D
Couple laps around the block will take care of it.

I didn't say to soak your brake pads in wd-40.wipe it on with a rag to just leave a film on the rotors so they don't rust.wash it off before you go of a ride.
if you have condensation coming from the concrete you might want to lay down some heavy plastic sheet, drop cloth style from hardware store, park the bike on top of it and leave plenty hanging to the outside of the cover

Brake rotors have a high iron content. They all rust from non-use. (No ball bustin' intended Rocko) First few miles knocks the rust off, and it doesn't get imbedded in your pads. If it does, so what. There's iron filings in your brake pads too.
Bottom line? Faagetaboudit!!!!!!!!!!!!

Next winter you you can store your Ultra ( no charge ) in my garage along with my bike and Msocko3. My garage is heated and has an alarm system on it. You only live about 27 to 30 miles from my house. I would even consider taking you back home so that you wouldn't have to hitch hike. The only problem would your Ultra would probably be jealous because of all the loving care the other 2 Ultras receive. Just think, the best of all worlds would be there, 1 bike with duals on it, 1 with 1 pipe on it and 1 bike with 1 exhaust and 1 fake exhaust pipe. It wouldn't get any better. It is your call.
Thanks guys for the ideas.
1. Now I understand the WD-40 thing.
2. I think I will just forget about it and ride.
3. Just so everyone feels comfortable. I am painting the fake pipe. That way when we're out and about. No one outside of the group will know. And we won't have to beat anyone down for smart lippin'.
