First off…I know I’m just a "Hangarounder". Some of you folks have quick wits (or is it quick finger wits?) and I could never keep up. But thanks for so many laughs here.

Sometimes a little oil comes out of my oil fill hole on my 2003 Heritage Softail. Just like we've all read about this happens most often at long duration highway speeds. I know to keep the oil level a little low. I have a feuling oil pump, 26G cams, and Baisley spring. Otherwise the engine is stock with 36k miles. My oil pressure is good and the bike runs great. I'm suspicious that the problem might be that my HD analog oil temp. dipstick fits very loosely (it's three years old) in the oil fill hole. So...my question is are there any tricks for a shade-tree mechanic to determine if the crank pressure is too high and causing this oil-puke? I could simply replace the dipstick and see if that fixed it, but heck...that'd be too easy. I'd like to learn something new every time I fix a problem. TIA

I ran into this problem after building my engine, and putting in baisley spring.

If you get really bored could try aligning oil pump. A bit of work, don't know if it would help.

Not sure about the set up on softails, but on touring bikes they changed vents around 03. Look at some newer bikes and see if they have differant oil lines.

Won't help you, but for other who may discover this, pre 03(I think 03) have a vent that run from cam chest to oil tank, by starter. They sell a kit that replaces the oil oikl spout, and runs cam chest vent to oil spout.

I changed vents and aligned at the same time. It did help. Still get alittle.

07s went to screw in cap. Easier then fixing. But where does the pressure go now?

If leaking from the fill hole on the oil bag then your fill cap isn't sealing properly. The oil does foam up quite a bit the faster you go. Run it hard, stop it and look in the oil bag and you will see what I mean.

I think its a little more then having cap in tight. Otherwise why did they go to screw in cap on 07s?

Put sure doesn't hurt to make sure its tight.

Thanks for the replies. So I found the original dipstick up in the attic and plugged it in. Holy cow, I had forgotten how tight the original dipstick fit. I think the only problem I have is that the temp. dipstick just fits too loose. I guess the rubber seal on top is worn out. I'm gonna run with the original dipstick for a while. It'll either stay in and stop the oil puking, or it blow out with enough force to smack the cager talking on the phone in the next lane. Either way?...I'm good. I am just curious though. Can crank case pressure be measured somehow?

The oil pressure sender is in the cam chest, coukld measure from there.

I have never seen it first hand, but have heard of dipstick blowing right out. If it keeps blowing out, could try align oil pump, that and see if they changed venting on new bikes and if they have a retrofit kit.

Dealer gave me sh&t about ordering kit to change oil lane, I had to get part # myself.

It ain't nuttin. The only problem I had was a loose fitting dipstick. Thanks for the replies.

Glad you found it. What part of Charlotte are you from?

Does it have an "O" ring that is the same Diameter as the one on the Temp Gauge? Maybe all you need is a new "O" ring...
...just a thought!
