This is something I remember from my old church that the pastor once taught in a new members class.
The glance & gaze concept has to do with our wants and desires in life.
Usually if we want something (or want something we think need), we are gazing at it, we focus on that 'something'. One might even become obsessed with getting that something.
Hmm...lets put this in prespective that Doofs can understand: buying that 95 ci or 98 ci upgrade kit for the bike. One really wants that kit, when that person jumps on their bike to ride it, all that person can think of buying that kit and getting it on the bike...rooma-zoom-zoom. That person has his/her gaze on that want/need, while they only glance at GOD. Usually that 'want/need' is not acheived either. Something like this:

Glance
Now, if one was to focus on GOD, remembering everyday what HE has freely given to you, the things he has already given to you. Realize too that when I use the term 'thing' I am not necessarily talking about something material. The 'want/need' that was once gazed at will become unimportant. That 'want/need' is something that will come to you eventually if it is truly needed.

Gaze
People can disagree with me, but I've always thought of that lesson Pastor Kieper gave and it has made me someone who is tries to apply this concept whenever I think of things like a better job, larger home, other stuff...and, yeah, a 95 ci upgrade kit.
Lastly, sometimes GOD's answer is, "No".
