Cindy & I are kickin' around the idea of riding around Lake Superior next summer, with a side trip to the Spam museum. We plan to leave from Duluth, MN, ride over to Sault Ste. Marie, up into Canada (eh!) and back to Duluth.

How's that sound?

be sure to check the entry rules for getting into Canada before you plan it out, they really tightened them up.

Yeah, I know, we already have passports...

Actually, it isn't as hard getting into Canada as it is getting back into the USA.

Did most of it this year. Get your alcohol at the duty free store. Canada is expensive! Also Sault Ste Mauire MI, is cheaper then SSM Canada.

Gas can be scarce on the eastern side.

I've been wanting to do the Lake Michigan Lighthouse circle tour...

I am going to assume that is the same route as the circle tour, just stopping at Lighthouses...... my better half and I took a run up Sheridan Rd a couple days ago and I thought the tour would be a great ride.....

I don't know why, but the preffered route is clockwise.

You don't need a pass port. I think they extended that to 2009, would have to check.

I have heard some stories, but was a breeze in and out. Canada didn't even ask our names. USA asked for drivers liscense. We crossed into Sault Ste Marie MI on Sunday evening, maybe two car wait. The next morning was backed way up.

Something to think about, corssing at non peak times.

Beer was $16 a 12 pack in Canada, stop at the duty free store.

Problem with Lake MI, is there is alot of boring areas, and alot of areas that just plain suck. I-43 boring. I-94 can really suck.

Article in paper last week said, Chicago traffic is the worse ever, and it will be for the next 3 years, part of new construction project.

Probably bet to ride the interesting areas and some kind of loop back.

Along UP is nice. Not real long but nice.

Looking for any info on UP or WI side, let me know if I can try to help.

Coming from Downstate, a nice ride would be around top of Lake MI, to Superior and around Lake Superior, then back to bridge.

I usually don't talk to trolls, but I am trying to be more tolerant. But I still say those Detriot boys have an attitude.:bum:

If we decide to do this we may want to elevate it to a Midwest Doofapalooza event and move it over to the Doofapalooza area.
I'm thinking late July or early August.dj

Harley,
I'm always up for riding. Dan and I are doing the Harley event in Wisconsin, I'll have to check with Dan on dates. If it works out maybe we can just continue on up and hook up with yas in the U.P. then head back down from there.

No but depending on what floor she was on, she could see the lake.

I went around in July. I got tourist brouchere on it, very handy had miles between towns. Will dig it up. I bet there are tourist councils that would send ya stuff.

Supposedly clockwise is the preferred way to go, dunno why.

There is one stretch before you hit Soo. I put 4.75 gallons was freaking. Ran the bike in 6th to keep the RPMs down.

Canada is sure pricey. On everything. Exchange rate was 1.1/1 but they treat cash as 1/1, so use credit card.

Stop at the duty free shops, can get alcohol tax free. Your supposed to stay 48hrs, but nobody asked us.

Going into Canada was a breeze, never asked my name. Talked to us for couple minutes. Coming back, asked for plate and liscence.

Going east from Wawa, there is no gas for 80 miles. Lucked out and found a garage open.

Wawa is a fair size town. All the gas stations were backed up. Now I know why. I put 4.75 gallons in.

We did the MN & ontario side in two days. Met my Dad about hour south of Superior. Then went clockwise/east through MN & ON. Keep in mind that just because there are dots on a map, there may not be much there.

Thunder Bay is a big town, we didn't stop. We stopped at some little place my Dad had been to before. Then we bent over and took it in the a$$.

There not alot up there for stopping, few gas stations. Thunderbay is big, Wawa fair, and one other town. Maybe Rossport. There was a small town on the top of the lake.

Also as for cost Sault Ste Marie CA is alot more expensive then the MI side.

The MI side has a lot of palce near the interstate, and few downtown. We got place downtown. Were able to walk around.

The Ramada there has a decent steak. I been there a couple times.

Gran Marais in MN is fair sized tourist town. Gran Marias in MI, is small little town. Been there on sled.

Don't know about downstate MI side, but the UP side is nice. The WI side is one of the most biring rides of your life. Atleast the Green Bay to Milwaukee part. Then you got to gothrough Chicago. I've done it quite a few time, lived in IN, but avoid it when I can.

A nice ride would be UP part of lake MI, then north to Lake Superior go east and then could go back around to bridge.

brochure I got, says 1300 miles. Fast legal time by a motorcyle, whatever that means, is 21 hours.
I I just did the top 1/2, done bottom seperate. I would say 4 days is about right.
Took 2 to ride from Superior to Sault Ste Marie.

SafetyMan

Downstate is below a rough line from Augres to Manistee, Northern Michigan refers to the area north of that line, in the Lower Penninsula, and above the bridge is the U.P.

yOopers will argue that they are the true Northern Michgan, and geographically speaking, that is correct....

....but they're not.

yOopers want to secede from the State of Michigan, and become their own state... I say we let them. It would be good for the country....

It would give Arkansas and West Virginia someone to pick on.

i think they really like to get the 20mph and over ones....gives them better braggin rights at the bar afterwards...

I grew up in the UP, State Troopers don't let to many walk.

The one in Wi was 24 over which is extreme, but Iwas passing a truck hauling a boat, with a short passing lane. ON a bike.

Pig on a bike in IL gave me one this year for 12 over. IL is the state that practically rewards your for speeding. Holiday weekend my dumb ass fault.

I am a little gun shy now.

this one was a young guy, and a biker. We were cutting up between michigan and superior in the woods somewhere and really letting the bikes run. He saw us all packed for a trip and stuff and just said if you go here to this road...etc, you will not be so tempted to drive so fast because of the beautiful scenery and turny roads... he did check our licenses etc. but let us go not even a warning ticket, just a verbal warning.

i said, thank you very much officer!

i get a kick out of the bubble gum lite that mi troopers have on the cars.

i know we were lucky, but every now and then, even a blind squirell finds a nut
