Had the day off, so I figured I should get my ass up to Bakersfield. Started out from Circuit City at 10AM (I had to buy a digital camera). I got a picture of the mileage, but it's kind of blurry. It was 4997 or close. By the time I got on the 5 freeway I popped 5k.
Absolutely put the hammer down all the way to just past LA. 90 to 100 the whole way, then gazintas decided to put a stop to the fun. Traffic grinds to a 40mph crawl forcing me to split the #1 lane for the next 10 or 15 miles. Once that clears up it smooth sailing the rest of the way. First, though, is the grapevine, past the Santa Clarita valley, Castaic Lake and Lake Pyramid. The one picture with the lake in the background is near the summit at Lebec, near Frazier Park. At over 5000 feet, it was a little cold, but worth it.
Down the mountain, through the endless fields of something. Straight to the 43 freeway. I live pretty much right off of the 5 freeway, so I had like one turn to make! I made it and decided after seeing my first roadside cross on this new road, that this particular road would get my utmost respect. I would not lay down lengthy patches on it, nor would I wheelie through it's stop signs. No, this would be different, special.
But then, there's this tractor doing 5 miles an hour, maybe I could just... But no, I passed him legally, maintained the speed limit. Well, actually, I'm not sure about that one, as I didn't see a sign. But I did a very modest clip right directly up to the very spot that so many of our brothers have been before me.
Our particular shrine has the distinct advantage of being at the intersection of the 43 and the 58 (north?). A couple roadside vendors have set up shop there selling Bonzai trees and jerkey. It's actually genius if you think about it. Anyways, it's also a great place to recruit potential photographers.
Anyways, got the picture, gassed up right there on the 43 (whose done that!!!) and came the whole way back without a break. Rolled in with 5241 miles at 4PM.
