no choice for me either. Didn't wear one, never went down, (on the street anyway to many times to count on dirt bikes) ... so I still don't. Unless that, "I have a lovely bunch of coconuts" was for the likes of me.
EDIT.............
on the dirt I always wore one.... I aint stupid or nuthin ya know:roflback: :roflback:

Have 3 or 4 of them. Full, 3/4, 1/2 wear one 95% of the time. I have to think when it is happing I don't want to say to myself " given the choice I think I might want the chance to put it on right about now."

Historically speaking:
1 Never
2 only in the Dirt
3 always when the kids started riding (the ol lead by example thing)
4 always during mandatory helmet law
5 sometime after repeal of mandatory law
6 luckily yes when we went down
7 always for years after
8 98% now (intercom and tunes add enjoyment to tripping with co-rider)
I have my own version on Mandatory Helmet Law with regards to the grandkids.
You wear a helmet, boots, gloves and long sleeves or Pop's repossesses the bikes no questions ask! :badmood:
Al can you create a button on the pole for that one?

Wearing a full face.
Despite how impervious my head is to reasoning, learning of new information and bugs, I am certain the ground is even harder. I want to be riding for a lot of years.
Besides, if my Mom finds out I am not wearing a helmet, I will get hollered at...:nono:

This poll seems like something from the media. Should have yes its manadatory and no I don't, those those to me would be obvious questions. You have always wear one and would wear two if I could.
Been down twice once with a helmet, once without, both in helmet free states. When I had the helemt on I skidded, glad it was on. When it was off snapped my neck back couldn't move it the next day. If the extra weigth was there I may in a wheel chair.
Motorcycles are dangerous, don't fool yourself into thinking anything will change that. Helmets do help, but still alot of other thgns can happen.

I didn't vote. . .there isn't one that applies to me. I don't wear one, went down and haven't decided whether I will nor not when I go back to riding.

i have 2 of 'em and hardly ever wear them, even though the army says i have to (by choice, not out of defiance). the first one i bought was a HD half, it was like wearing a drag chute attached to your neck. i just got my ACC half last week, i will say if it's as comfortable as every one says i'll wear it all the time.

When I first started riding there were no helmet laws and for the most part, no helmets. Wore one when I rode dirt. When I started road riding again, promised the BH I would wear one. When I went down, almost two years ago now, I had one on and the old coconut was about the only thing that didn't hit the pavement. Still honor the promise to the BH though.

Well, When I started riding you had to wear one. The first time I road without one was Sturgis "93. I liked it. I had ridden with one for 23 years prior to that. Now, I am like swmnkdinthervr, I wear one around town, but when out in the sticks, I may not. It is my choice and I do not care what you do or do not do, not my head, or ticket, depending on location. My wife wears one all the time. Her choice. When she rides with me, it is still my choice, but she prefers I wear one, so I do most of the time when with her.
I have had them save my life both on the street and in the dirt.
I had a guy turn left in front of me while doing 60 one day. Wife was on the back wearing a helmet, I was not wearing one. Strange what you think when everything slows down as you lock up the brakes and are picking out the impact point you want to hit on the side of the truck. My though was, "Sh1t, this is going to hurt, I am not wearing a helmet".
Still did not put it on after I avoided the truck and stopped to let the adrenaline subside. He saw me and swerved just enough for me to get by at the last moment.

I'm required to wear one.
Before the law went into effect in '92 I wore one most of the time because the military mandated it. When given the choice (a ride into AZ), I may choose not to.
I'm 100% about freedom to choose if you're 18 and above.

I tried going without one time, just to say I did. Felt naked. When I first started riding, an old guy told me "ya only have one head - don't skimp on yer helmet..." Thought that was good advice, so I saved and bought a top of the line Bell 3/4. Been buying and wearing good helmets since.

I went down without one, hit my head but no real damage (says alot) and I still ride without one most of the time. I have 3 different 1/2 helmets and thier only comfortable if I have the windshield on. If Im going any kind of distance I usually wear one. If I could find a half helmet that dosent catch air and choke me Id probably wear it. I just dont like the closed in feeling I get from other styles of helmets.

I wear a full face when it's cooler, 3/4 when it's hot. Never ride without one. The wife told me I had to. I told myself I had to when looking at those guys at the bottom of this post.

The only time I don't wear one is after wrenching when I ride it down to the end of the cul-de-sac and back.
Otherwise I wear the Shoei full face 95% of the time, the other the Shoei 3/4.

They are only required of first year riders here in Maine, but I always wear one. Like most, I fully support choice. Unfortunately, I hear quite a few questionable arguments on both sides of the issue. I hate to see people swayed by misleading statistics and anecdotes.

Now I feel weird without it... I also feel weird with it

We don't have a choice. Have to wear one in MD. Didn't wear one before helmet laws went in affect eons ago though. And "sometimes" I take mine off when in PA or DE. BUT I usually start thinking about my kids and put it back on.

I like the one Tim Allen wore in "Wild Hogs".
I'd put a large "43" on each side and be the coolest cat on two wheels. Along with my chaps, "***** fell off" shirt and doo rag.
Which is actually a stupid name since I have no "doo".

I have a collection of the half and shorties. my kids have left helmuts behind, i ususally dont wear one but cold, rain etc, i will break out my old bell full face. also when on interstates, or city driving. however 90 prcent of my miles are usually tooling around the town and county roads, with no helmut, just a ballcap to keep the sun off.

Yeah, but it's not DOT and you know there's some LEO waiting for a guy on a bike to don that and wear it around here.

I like the idea of choice for riders over a certain age limit.
We don't have a choice here in NC.
I wear one and always will. But, I would prefer to have a choice.
I sure used to like to ride without one in South Carolina.

There needs to be a "sometimes I do, sometimes I don't" choice...
I used to wear one all the time in Michigan because there is a helmet law. When I moved to SC, I went without for awhile, and now I'm back to wearing mine. I might go without here and there when it gets really hot, but I feel better having one on.

Given the choice, I wouldn't wear one and haven't while out of state... I feel a little unprotected at first, but get used to it in about 3 seconds. Riding is an expression of freedom for me and the helmet works against that.

I always wear one -- Although I live in a commy state (New Jersey) my head is worth more to me than that feeling the wind blowing my hair around. IMOVHO My Brains and Skull are to much of asset to fool around with. I have 3 helmets a HD Half, an HD Composite Full Face, for colder weather, and a Head Trip Carbon Graphite (My Favorite)

In my younger years (8) Dad never made us wear a helment.
In my twentys it didn't go with the black leather mini skirt and high heels.
I usually got on the bike everyday right after a shower in my shorts and top with saddles- (CA-girl)
and rode around the block to dry my hair. Then California passed :badmood:
the helmet LAW. (It is like a seat belt.) If it's law you have to do it.
Nevada also has a helmet law so, I have about four helmets and when I
ride, I wear one. (If )the law goes away  and all the traffic too! I might
not wear one except on trips. Long rides with bugs and birds requires helmets.

Except for riding on Base; I didn't, and won't when I get back on the seat. However I'm just smarter than you all. I crashed on my knee and shoulder, no way was I gonna crack my skull. I intend to follow the same plan for my next wreck.

Growing up I only wore a helm while riding in the dirt. I had a helm for my streeet ride but it mostly rode with me strapped to the side of my bike. I wear one now due to the mandatory law but like other ACC helm owners have stated I think I will wear it at all times.
I wear one cause state law says I have to. When There was no law I was a teen and early 20's. I only used a lid in cold weather the rest of the time was a cap on backwards just to keep my hair from blowing around. If they ever drop the law I think I'll wear the helmet in traffic and on cold days.
