This is my very rough outline for my Summer '11 vacation.

Time to fill in some red spot on da map, eh?

Maybe even visit some of K ren's long lost ancestors along the way...

Dammmm Chip, you're going right past my 'front door' and The Wizard of Bethlehem. Depending on when you make the trip, we might be able to incorporate a "River Road Ride" as part of your sojourn. Got extra beds if you need a place to stay.

Looks like a great first plan, Chip. By the time you add in the "must see's" from members in that area, it'll get even better.

My waypoint at Corning, NY is at the south end of the Finger Lakes.

Watkins Glen racepark is also there, I've worked in wells on the track property.

Is there a ferry or bridge or tunnel that I could take from the north of Long Island to go to Connecticut without going back through the city?

And you can thank me later. :)

Edit: do you *really* want to go thru downtown Boston? SRSLY?

New and improved route:

Change #1: Skip Providence and go to Newport instead. Drive along Ocean Drive and see all the gynormous mansions that line the coast. Grab some quahogs (pronouced Ko-Hogs) for lunch at Anthony's.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l24/crw15213/screenshot7.jpg

Change #2: Drive thru Boston to New Hampshire, then get off 95 and drive along Route 1A which is parallel to the NH seacoast. The road is pretty windy, but there are some spectacular views to be had.

http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l24/crw15213/screenshot13.jpg

Change #3: Continue up Rt 16 to Tuftonboro (what's there, anyway?), and go all the way to Conway. Take the Kankamangus highway (Rt 112) and get ready for one of the best roads in New England in terms of curves. Enjoy Mt Washington as your backdrop. And if you're brave enough, take your bike up the car road and enjoy the view (if it's not fogged over).

Stay on Rt 112 until you hit 302. Then from there, take it to 89 and then head south on Vt 100. This is arguably THE BEST road for motorcycles in the region. It follows the spine of the Green Mountains and is pretty awesome. It's long, windy, and full of curves and switchbacks. Lots of old Vermont towns dot the way down. Follow it til you hit Rutland, then continue with your other route into New York.

I concur. He pretty much nailed a great route for you. A little bit of everything. It will of course add a little time, but it will add an awesome leg to your trip.

What's in Tuftonboro you ask?? Why, I am. Not much else though. But I'll buy you a cup of coffee at the General Store for making the stop.

If you went just a wee bit farther north on I-295, you could visit the original L.L. Bean store with their indoor trout pond.

Chip / K ren;

Having spent 4 years of working in downtown Boston and becoming very familiar with traffic on all sides of the city, I'll offer the following.

Traffic into/around Boston and the northeastern shoreline communities can be extremely bad. Time of day and day of week will play greatly into your ability to make time here. If your going into Boston to see something special that you've always wanted to see, then the tradeoff may be worthwile. However, if your not planning to stop, then I'd recommend by passing the city on the 495 beltway and hooking up with I-95 way north for your journey into NH and southern Maine.

Boston traffic during rush hour, is like people who've never riden a Harley. If you haven't done it, you won't understand. Oh, and Fridays are worse. :whistling:

Of course, if you have a tour guide for this segment it might not be so bad. :Poke:

The above described route will be just south of Franconia notch.
Franconia Notch and Crawford Notch can be added for another couple hours. Well worth it if you have the time.

Agree. I live an hour away and honestly hate going down there. So unless there is something specific you want to see in Boston, avoid it altogether. Same for NYC. I have a detour for that one as well that can literally save hours off of your trip time.

Needless to say, you shall call me when you're in the area so we can meet up.

Been there done that. I went to a stunt show on Long Island one year (Memorial Day weekend) and didn't know about the ferry, or NY traffic. It took about 7 hours to get from Boston to Port Jeff.

I will never make that mistake again. I go across the Tappan Zee now whenever I pass through the area.

Granted I have not lived there since 1980, but Rt 50 through MD would not strike me as a pleasant ride. Of course, if your goal is to go north up the eastern shore, then you ain't got many options unless you swing all the way to the south and cross the bridge/tunnel from VA.

50's not awful, as long as you're nowhere near it on Fridays. Beach traffic is horrendous.
