Big Tom

I went last year, the week before plus a few days into the rally. I've never been there more than 2 weeks before or after, but don't think Sturgis would have much to offer the rest of the year. The Black Hills and other great riding would still be around but I bet a lot of campers and motor homes would clog up the roads.

Dirty Dan

I still like the idea of going the week before the rally and am tempted to do just that. I just don't care for crowds and would like to ride the Black Hills and visit vendors before it gets nuts there.

Does anybody have reasons why that would be a bad idea?

I'm not sure when the vendors get there.

The black hills are a great place to hang out and ride for most of june, july and august. Starting early september it can get real cold at night.

Last year the vendors started setting up in Rapid at the dealer on Tuesday the week before. I didn't go to downtown Sturgis till thursday and lots were set up already. The week before has been getting real crowded the last few years. If you wait for the last day and the week after, t-shirts are only $5.

Hmmm...I might have to regroup a bit. Maybe the week before isn't all that.

Everything is trashed --- folks are burnt out and are starting to really want their town back to normal and the roads in the hills are filled up with bumper to bumper convoys of 50 foot Winnebagos from what a friend of mine who we stay with every year has told us.

Big Tom
02-20-2007, 12:26 AM
I wouldn't want to be there the week after because of what Jams said. The last day (Sunday) you can pick up deals on shirts and stuff but not much other stuff to do. Most people leave Saturday afternoon or night to get back home to go to work on Monday. I stay in the south hills and ride out on Monday morning sometimes.

Probaly,sorta maybe, hope so, dunno

The traffic is not as as people say. Parking on the outsides help, side streets, Pamida. Going to FLS or Glencoe or Chip, is a bit of pain. In the past had decent luck on the side roads, last year seemed to be more traffic.

I would not stay at Chip or Glence again, unless with a group looking a for party, or for the bands. Early in the morning is really, I usually go to the sidehack for breakfast.

I am not saying there is no traffic, but it does move. Engine will get damn hot. I change my oil, when I get back from out west.

First year, I stayed at the Rally. Now I just stop for a night, and keep going west. Its a convient place for me to stop. 500 and 400 day. The 400 day puts you in early enough to see the Rally, then get out the next day.

Glen Coe campground because of business from Aug 4th ~ 12th ... We will have one awesome setup so all Doof Clenas are welcome. The bad side of Glen Coe is no visitors welcome unless you pay (SUCKS). I got to be careful about what I say ... they are my employer that week!!! Even worse is the bike has to be pulled behind the box truck in a trailer
:crying:

Keep in touch and I am sure it will be a great time!!!

As for the people talkign about going to Sturgis, not during the Rally, the town itself doesn't have much to offer. Same as any small town you can go to. If you really hate crowds don't go into Strugis. Stop at some of the small towns nearby.

Myself I love the ride out there, seeing more and more bikes, until its just a line of bikes. It has never caused me a problem. Maybe had to wait behind somebody to get gas, which can happen anytime.

Ya the town itself is busy and there is lines. It won't kill you. Park on the outside and walk in.

To me all the bikes add to the experience. I just don't think the crowds are as big a deal, as some people worry about.

Right on! The lines and crowds is just a part of what makes The Black Hills Classic into the greatest motorcycle rally any where.

I don't mean the lines makes the rally, but seeing all the bikes does for me.

I don't think the lines are that bad. Only place you run into long lines are in the town of Sturgis itself. If I was scared of lines, I would still go during the Rally, just don't go into town. I would go into town atleast once though, its cool to see all the differant bikes and trikes. Some wild stuff shows up.

Like I siad I didn't find the traffic in to that awful, sucked, but not so much I wouldn't go again. As far as the lines at the bar or for food, no differant then going to bar on Friday night or a fair.

I just think a guy should expereince atleast one time.

The traffic lines are 99% caused by cages full of tourists wanting to see the bikers in their natural element.
The trick to avoiding the lines is knowing all the shortcuts around town.
Across the street from my friends house where we stay every year is a public parking lot where cages with out of state plates will pull in and park. The folks will get out and slip into to their biker gear and walk downtown. There is nothing that will make your eyes blink worse than seeing some folks climb out of cage and put chaps on.

Ya sides help alot. Last year it seemed alot more people were doing the same. I also try to park on the outskirts. By Pamida or the bestball field. Every year I need to run and get a bulb from J&P.

I have never paid for parking. Just park on a side street. Sometimes at the Spoke, go in have a beer, and just leave the bike there.

I like going to FLS, but traffic is bad getting there, last year I didn't go. OL doesn't like the place either, so that doesn't help.

Jams

Everything is moving out of town so things in town aint so bad. We have noticed that downtown at night sure has been getting stale the last few years with all the camp grounds doing concerts and drawing the downtown parade away.

The only real bottlenecked area that the isn't a shortcut around is from the Spoke to the VA hospital. Last year they opened a dirt road they were trying to get traffic past that area on but there wouldn't be traffic problems if they would re-route cages away from Lazelle and Junction.

If you haven't, I think, it interesting to see Sturgis in full swing.

Doesn't really bother me like it does some. Learn the side streets, park on the out skirts.

So you pay a buck more for beer, 1x50. Oh well.

I just like seeing all the bikes build up through MN, by the time you Soux Falls, there tons of them. Never caused me much of problem.

One time 6 *******s were taking up both lanes, and holding up traffic. I rode right down the middle, scared the hell out of one of there old ladys. Dumb on my part. But those guys where *******s. Problem is some guys think there fast, and there not.

Not sure which way you are planning to ride,,,,,but a highly recommended road is I-25 to Guernsey, Wy and then take 270 north to Lance Creek and then jog over to 85. :verycool:

270 is just a real cool stretch of road that seems lost in time with very little traffic on it and more fun than dodging big trucks on the way to Lusk from Cheyenne.

If Woody was to stray into Montana just a few miles,,, he could spray down a highway 7 sign between Wibaux and Baker, Montana.
