Natchez Trace

The Natchez Trace is a historical route that starts from Natchez, Mississippi and ends in Nashville. I've been to Natchez once and its pretty downtown, with a lot of historical buildings.

Any of y'all ever ridden it? What did you think about it?

Rode it several years ago. Loved it.

The 50 MPH limit is enforced, so it's slow riding. It's a great two lane, with basically no intersections, and reasonable traffic. You get about 55 MPG, because you're going 50 +/- MPH in 5th. Its easy riding through great scenery.

I read an article on this not long ago. The write-up made it out to be hot and humid combined with lots of RV's and traffic in the summer. The advice was to go early or late in the year. What's your opinion, Harris?

We went in May, before schools were out. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Thanks guys for all the great information. It sounds like a neat ride.

It does get hot and humid throughout the south in the summertime, and especially in those states that border the Gulf of Mexico. As y'all mentioned, the spring (before school's out) or fall is probably the best bet. The only thing to watch out for in the early spring and late fall are cold fronts, but by late spring (May), they're long gone,... and its not really that hot yet.

How much time do you think it takes to ride the trace from Natchez to Nashville and doing it justice by stopping once in a while to check out some of the historic sites? Two days?

We left New Orleans in the morning, and stopped for the night in Tupelo, then continued on to Nashville (then Columbia, MO) the next day. We were pushing it because of a real estate closing. If I had it to do again. I would want two full days for the parkway, because there are historic sites very frequently at little pullouts along the parkway. It would be nice to take the time to really see the little details.

Also if you call the park service, they will send you lots of good maps and info.
