Here ya' go...
What we have here is a failure to communicate.
Perhaps I can use my God-given artistic talents to illustrate. To wit:

Well, the leg length was a little exaggerated for illustrative purposes, but they are scary, nonetheless.

The spiders are investigative little automatons that search your site for pertinent content, keywords, etc. to use as criterion for their search engines. Normally, this is a welcome thing, but Yahoo's implementation is invasive, eats up bandwidth and CPU time, thus slowing down many forum type sites. At one point we had more "Yahoo Slurp" spiders on the site than members.
I've written a script at the root level of our domain that prevents on yahoo's spiders from entering our site.

I modified the code, but forgot to add back in one element... AND THEY CAME BACK.... I've fixed it now.
Don't tell apache36 about these spiders. He's ascared of 'em.

The ones with the fangs and puss.
I think jelsoft also has a very good list of spiders you can throw in the site control pannel to help you find out who these bastages are.
Most obey the robots.txt rules, but not all.
