Nice work Paul.

I had a RKs seat but now mine is back to stock. The only thing I have taken off is the radio shelf sheet metal.

I really dig the cop seat.

Are we the only ones here who paid 50% of book for our bikes?

Hello fellow cop bike brothers. Defenity the best bikes available. Most people don't realize they have twice the HP and tourqe of the civilian RK. Don't let anyone know.

The 2004 and 2005 version was 13k to the Dept. What did you pay?
Out here in Calif, the dealers lease out the bike for $1 a year with a maint contract. After it is used for 12 to 18 mo, it is sold as a used bike with a tag of aroung 16k, unless they were able to get some takeoff seats and bags. Then, they might use it as a rental or will try to sell it for 17k.
The Calif bikes are considered escort bikes, because Calif has requirements that the standard police bike can not pass.
I bought mine out of state from a city that did not lease thier bikes, they bought them.

The police seat is very comfortable, but it puts you high in the saddle to catch more wind at speed. It is great for observant motor police, not so great at highway speeds.

OK,

One of my riding friends is a Chief of police.

We took a ride and stopped by the station and I got the grand tour....cool stuff.

They have brand new e-glide, big bore bikes that look and sound awesome.

HE gave me the unused police decals from the saddle bags and said "put them on your bike" It is not against the law.

I admit they do look cool in the groove on my bags where they are meant to go....But I do not want to be a poser or a police buff.

He said as long as I am not pulling people over or dressing like a cop it is OK.

My Bike was an actual police bike....but I am not a cop...they just would look cool on an actual cop bike.....

What would you do?

Jams

I would not run them.

Let me see if I can explain why ---- it would be cheapening the decal for someone who had not paid the dues or walked the walk to run them.

It would be like someone having a Harley Decal on their pickup truck and never owned one.....

California has required cat muffs on baggers since 04' for sure and maybe earlier. They also require charcoal cannisters on all big bikes. The police bike is sold with neither. 06 may have had them, but 07 does not.
The Harley police bike is designed to be a 49 state bike, and the send similar out of the country. A calif police bike is considered special order. I have heard that police bikes have richer downloads since they idle and go at low speeds, I am told that the advance is different to meet a 0-60 requirement, these ecm flashes are not legal in Calif. My bike had an air cleaner box that had holes in it. It looked like it was made that way. Stock Harleys do not have this. I am sure that there are other differences, I heard that the cams have similar lifts, but may be different. The pistons are the same, as are the heads. I think the gearing is the same. Police bikes have a more powerful stator and a different clutch, as well as different wiring.

Wile having a police sticker on your bike may not be against the law in your town or state, it is in many other states.

And there is the whole group of idiots out there that don't like cops, and just might run you off the road or take a shot at you because they think you is one.

I have given the sticker subject some thought.

I will not run the police stickers.

I will, however have my sign guy make me some stickers in the same color, same font that say POPEYE.

I will install them in the slots on the bags.

I have also gone back to the cop seat. I modified it, moved it further back and down, used a different airbag and have a tiny compressor for it. Very comfortable.

I traded my police RK on standard RK but I put air ride seat on civilian bike and I moved seat front a couple inches so I don't have to stretch arms out so far on longer trips. I never found good handlebars, I guess.

I love the cop seat. I'm 6'4 so it works perfect. I road my friends 08 Street Glide, it felt like my knees were in my chest.

The cop seat puts you up alot higher on the bike. The further up the road you can see the better.

There is a guy selling a 07 Police Bike Seat Setup on VTF right now. I really like his seat, it is different material then the standard ones. I'm tempted to buy it just for the seat. But I have a mustang passenger seat that matches my cop seat.

FYI- You guys probably already know this but. You can relocate the air tank inside the left hand side cover. It's about a 20 minute job and cleans up the rear fender. I did that and put on a laydown plate bracket

LEft side cover for air tank...........awesome. I will look into that.

It's pretty easy to move the air tank from the top of the rear fender to under the left side cover. There's ample room and you can attach the air tank to the left side of the battery box. You will have to remove the plastic cover under the saddle as well as the battery.

In order to get the tank to fit under the side cover, you have to trim part of the bracket that originally attached to the bottom of the radio plate. Try to trim off as much as possible without damaging the tank. Save the trimmed piece as you can use that as a template in the next step.

There are already three holes in the battery box, two large, one somewhat smaller. I chose the smaller hole. I'm not sure of the diameter but it is slightly larger than 3/16". Use one of the old tank screws to attach the trimmed part of your old bracket to the battery box. I set mine up so I had one hole to drill toward the rear of the bike. Level the bracket as best as you can and drill a 3/16" hole in the battery box. Remove the bracket/template. The holes should be exactly 1" apart, center to center.

Take your air tank and install it to the battery box, with the gauge and air fitting facing the rear of the bike, using two leftover bracket screws. Put a few drops of blue Loctite on each screw prior to assembly. The Loctite will help the screws stay snug. Now try attaching the side cover. If it hits the air tank assembly, you'll have to rotate the air gauge and/or air hose fitting. You shouldn't have to turn either piece more than 1/4 of a turn.

http://orbitorange.net/images/airtankone.jpg

Route the air line in such a way as to prevent kinks. I trimmed the original air line and routed it between the upper frame tube and wire loom, then attached it to the air tank. Leave some slack on the bladder end. You want nice smooth bends.

http://orbitorange.net/images/airtankfour.jpg

Air up the tank and check for leaks. Reinstall the battery, side cover and plastic cover. Go for a ride. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

Here's a few other pics of the install.

Ah, er, um, buh....

Here's my cop bike. She's an Electra Glide, tho, 2006 vintage...

http://orbitorange.net/images/doofclenas/copperleft.jpg

She's got a PC III, Jackpot mufflers, Stage I AC, plus some chromey doodads, some black powdercoated stuff as well.

She had 121 miles when I got her last November. She's seen WI, IL, IN, KY this year. I think she has around 7100 miles on her now.

orbit

Do you have details on the bag emblems?

Yeah, I put those in.

They're Harley re-pop tank emblems, part number 61777-63T for the emblem, part number 61782-93T for the adapter kit. The shape of the emblem mimics the shape of the insert area real well.

I had to do some slight trimming on the top of the emblem to get it to fit as the emblem is slightly taller than the insert area. I probably trimmed off about an 1/8" on the emblem and just a bit off the adapter. I also had to smooth out the adapter as it has a slight curve in it to fit the side of a fuel tank.

The adapter has two way 3M tape attached to it, so basically the whole deal is a metal decal. The emblem attaches to the adapter with a couple of small machine screws.

I got 'em on sale at a dealer's Christmas open house last year. I think I paid like $45 for everything.

Here's a close up of the finished deal..

All of you may have already seen this, but it's a nice (and CHEAP) option for covering the black plastic "hockey puck" caps, saddle bag openers on police bikes.

Cut off the top of a used chrome oil filter with a dremel or something similar. Wrap a couple wraps of electrical tape around the cap to make it fit more snug and glue the chrome piece over the cap with a good epoxy glue. If you want to dress it up a bit more, use a couple of the stick-on gas cap emblems over the. Philip did this to his Police RK and it looked real good.

Another thing he did that turned out well, was to get some "Road King" script pieces like those found on the front fender of a RK and had them mounted on a piece of chromed sheet metal, cut to fit in the space where "POLICE" would be found on the saddle bags. Looked really sharp!

Yeah, I got some Electra Glide fender script thingies a while back and was thinking of doing something similar, although I was gonna use some black painted small square tubing stock and mount the script to the bag that way.

Sorta thinkin' it'd give the script sort of a 3-D effect.

Ain't really got much past the ponderin' part, tho.
