why do they have three holes when you can use one type oil?

You know that really is a good question to me. If they want you to run syn3 or whatever in all three why make them separate? Especially the motor/primary. I could see leaving the tranny out, cause I just cant see how even they think syn3 or any motor oil would be the best in there.

Shush you guys! HD will figure that out, and all you will be able to use is Syn3...

Because the motor, primary and tranny are 3 different componets, bolted together....excluding the Sportster.

<<< no harley mechanic here so pardon whats maybe a dumb question.... but... isn't the primary area created just by bolting on the piece that surrounds the primary chain etc, then the primary cover and ispection cover on that? ... I mean it doens't have a 'back' does it... the back of the primary is just the 'outside' of the motor right? So making them used common oil would be about as simple as putting a hole there?

You would think, on the surface....but each component utilizes it's own unique lubrication system, with different pressures. Pumping oil throughout the entire mechanism would be detrimental to each specific application....plus,..I'm not convinced that motor oil is sufficient for the transmission...it was always a no no, until H-D came up with their own syn.

clutch residue in your rings, cyl. walls...? no way...
one component failure would trash the whole thing...
probably be hard to keep fluid levels at optimum height in each component...

Excellent point X. Kinda like one of these copiers with the fax, copy, and print. If one bites the dust, they are all down.

yes no argument from me on motor oil not being good for the tranny. and I sure got no problem with having a seperate oil for the clutch than the motor for the reasons given by you xkvator. course jap bikes have run lots of miles with the same oil on the clutch. (dont take that to be any indication of wanting my harley to be anymore like a jap bike just an observation.:whisper: )
edit---------
good observation by you to Rock... thats why I refuse to buy one of those all in one printers... when you apply that to my bike I get it now!

the primary area USED to be different and on shovels etc. there even was an oil circuit through there. which most upgraded later, but anyway maybe a holdover from those days? on my iron head sportster, i run tran lube and in the tranny of the shovel gear lube. so once upon a time..

That's right,..I'd forgotten that on the shovels.

Many bikes use the same oil for all components. I like three because I do not get chain and gear metal flakes from the primary going through my engine oil pump and I think gear oil with its special anti shear additives makes more sense in a transmission.
Old shovels used to cycle engine oil across the chain and suck it back into the sump side of the pump back to the oil tank. Many of a shovel oil pump has been scored by the large metal flakes that can come from the primary. That was the reason for the oil screen in line with the feed to the lifters, to keep those large metal pieces out of the lifters. It was held over on the EVO, but I have never had any metal in the one on my EVO and it was gone on the TC motors because; it was no longer needed and the oil goes through the filter first on a TC.

Agree, differant pressures, and might hard to circulate to all. I think it also makes it easier service. I don't want to drain my oil to change the clutch.
Ran syn in all holes for 37k miles, bought redline last week. Not sure if I need to, but I don't think will hurt.
Jap bikes have it all in one, but jap bikes are not known for being easy to work on.

I think that the TC is basicaly a single unit, the oil pan goes the distance and there doesn't seem to be any adjustment, like a shovel.

Changed the oil in my road King today. Put mobil 1 V-Twin in the engine instead of Syn 3 and bike was much quieter. I was actually surprised. I was glad the primary is different from the engine, because it was much nastier than the engine oil when I drained it. Put B&M trickshift in there, seems to work well. Have to put Redline Shock Proof in the Tranny tomorrow. I like doing the maintenance, but I would much rather be riding.

The "B" motor has separate and distinct parts and the oil tank separate from the rest.

I've used Mobil 1 for years and like it. I also like Amsoil and Royal Purple. I use Bel-Ray gear lube in the tranny...'bout as good as it gets.

Iron head Sportster's primary and tranny used the same oil and the motor was seperate.
74s with a tin primary had a primary chain oiler on the oil pump it dripped onto the primary chain and leaked out the bottom of the tin. The tranny oil and engine oil were seperated.
The 74s with a cast primary cover metered the oil into the primary and reused it in the motor. They had seperate oil for the tranny and engine.
