Wha I have learned about ECMs in the past week...

If you have to replace your ecm, even if you get a new blank ecm from H-D, and they reprogram your new blank ecm with the bike's serial number and all that crap, and you have a tuning dongle from TTS, H-D or Power Vision that was married to the old ecm...none of the tuning dongles will work with the new ecm. Evidently, in each ecm there is a chip that gets written to whenever it gets married to a tuning dongle. Once it is written to, it's permanent, no erasing, no reprogramming, no getting it to "lose" it's memory, once and it's a done deal, forever.

Seems the ecms must be Mormons, because they can have multiple marriages. You can program the ecm with the SE Race Tuner, then use a PV tuner to marry the same ecm and load a different map. The TTS is different, it wants to be monogamous. Use it, and everybody else gets locked out of matrimony with the ecm.

Confusing as shit, ain't it?

You've got me even more confused. Your two paragraphs don't agree. Are they supposed to?

Bottom line - tuner dongle marries itself to the ecm. If you have to change the ecm, tuner dongle will not work with new ecm. The dealer can't do anything to fake out your existing tuning dongles into thinking that the new ecm is the old ecm.

Multiple tuners can be used on an existing ecm, EXCEPT the TTS tuner. In other words, I can flash the ecm with a Screamin' Eagle tuner, and if I have a Power Vision tuner, I can flash the ecm with that as well. One tuner doesn't care about the other, those two products can live together with the ecm. It's only the TTS that wants the ecm all to itself.

Hope I have thoroughly confused you now...:roflback:

In the case of a replacement ECM, I would hope customer service for said company would hook you up after showing receipt for new or used ECM.

Yet I'm mocked for my carburetor and my Blackberry. Neither has a dongle to dangle.

Warren, the dealer can put the bike's serial number into a new ecm, that is not the issue. As the service manager explained it to me, there is one chip in the ecm that has a unique identifier that gets info written into it that records the tuning dongle serial number(s). Info also gets written into the dongle with the chip's identifier. That info is unique to every ecm. Once that info is stored in the dongle, it's there forever.

I used to get upset over this stuff. Then I bought a Powervision and stopped reading HTT.

I'm a much happier person now.

I understood it to be that way. But dongles can be sent back and "fixed" to allow it to be used on a new ECM. Not sure they would go for it, but if I needed a new ECM, I would certainly ask.
