Metzler 888's Out Performing Expectations on '06 Road King

After rolling MOCO Dunlop tore sets for almost 10 year and tolerating their poor tire wear, ride and handling, the counter guy convinced me to try the Metzler 888.

I've rolled off 8,500 miles since installation and 5/32" of tread remains. "Theoretically" the tires are good for another 4K or so?

Highly recommend the Metz.

Your mileage will vary greatly depending on the type of riding your doing.

Lots of twisties at speed and they will wear down much quicker.

My last set was toast at 7500. Last Metzlers I'll ever use.

I tried 880s once. 5800 out of the rear. That was even worse than the Dunlop.

880s on Vader. Never get more than 3,000 miles from a rear tire.

Dinero 05-07-2016 09:13 AM

3,000!?!

I'd be putting tires on every other month.

MegaGlide 05-07-2016 09:15 AM

I had out of round Brazilian ones. No thanks.

And one would think Brazilians would be good at round stuff.

Supposedly, the 888's are better than the 880's, but they lost me with the smaller than advertised (on the sidewall) width and profile, accelerated wear and no better traction than the stock Dunlop's on my '06 RG.

Are they dual compound tread?

MegaGlide 05-07-2016 03:23 PM

Oops. My bad. No experience with 888s here. Just the shit Brazilian 880s.

13k on the front Dunlop and still have plenty of tread. The rear gave me about 10k.
New England secondary roads mostly.
My Indie suggests the HD Dunlops.

With the 16" wheels, you might want to take a look at the Dunlop Elite 3. 16k out of the rear, twice that on the front, no tracking rain grooves. And they stick plenty good all the way to the edge.

Thanks for the tip, Mega. I'll ask my Indie about those later this year.

I just switched out the rear to an American Elite. I tried an E3 several years ago and only got 8000k out of it.

Stupid me didn't know the MT90 rear tire size was going to limit mileage no matter who made the tire.

This time I installed a pingle sprocket spacer so I could get a MU85 on the rear. Holy crap is that a tight fit. Hope to get 12k out of this one. Only have 400 miles on it, but so far I really like it over the D402.

MegaGlide 05-08-2016 07:34 AM

Dunlop Elite 3 MT90-16 Front
Dunlop Elite 3 MU90HB-16 Rear

And I got 16k...
Ran 38 in the rear, 40 2-up. 36 in the front.

^This^

I only got 12,000 on the rear but the roads here have curves in them.
