No tire expert here, but like 8-Ball I'd be concerned about those load ratings as well. Indy should have known better.

I wouldn't be running those over 80, especially with a full load.

If you are running 1400# loaded 2 up, your rear tire is way under rated. Got to go with 8-Ball on this one. His reasoning is solid.
Even with a 60/40 split rear to front on load, which in my opinion it is more like 65/35, you would need a rear tire rated at 840# to support that load. At 65/35, you need 910. Just looked in my H-D Owners manual for my Heritage and my EG and H-D uses the 65/35 spit when talking about the Gross Vehicle Weight rating (GVWR). In addition to over loading your tires, which is the primary concern, you are also exceeding the GVWR of the bike. Not like I have never done that by a few hundred pounds myself. Was that 65/35 number for baggers specifically? It seems that that rear wheel gets a lot weight on a touring bike when riding 2 up. People move the tourpak back which allows the passenger to move back + all of the gear is loaded on back. It would be interesting to check axle loads on a fully loaded EG.

I have to agree with you though, I would think with a loaded bike, any bike, with the weight in the Tour Pak or on the luggage rack behind the rear axle, that would take weight off the front end and put a lot on the rear axle. The passenger sits almost on top of the rear axle and the only real load on the front wheel is the bike and the rider. I know that is why H-D put a 25 lb weight limit on the Tour Pak and something ridiculous like 10 lbs on luggage racks to prevent the front wheel from getting too light. Who follows that? Not me. Fully loaded, I would even go so far as a 75/25 split. The only time the front tire rating really comes into play is under heavy braking when there would be a large load shift to the front wheel. I find it strange that Conti tyres would specify the tires Term8r mounted as the direct replacements for the Ultra and not have the proper load rating for that size bike. |

I just threw the 1400# out there guessing. It does have me thinking though... went by a truck stop yesterday and was going to weight the bike on their scales but the power was out there for some reason so I will be going back... for sh!ts & giggles, I may stuff some clothes in each bag, throw some stuff in the tourpack, strap on the T-Bag full of clothes, load the two of us up and go see what the scale says. Their scale is split for weighing the axles on semis, so I can easily get each axle weight separately, plus total weight of bike.
As for Conti calling them a direct replacement.. I cant speak to that, I did look over the web sight 8 put up... and they are calling them tires for cruiser/touring bikes. Indy didn't specify that Conti was saying they were... just that was a tire he had would work and he claimed load rating was fine... so I got them without much further research. Around these parts, dealers and indies alike are hard to come by... One H-D dealer, two Indies... the one I got my tires from, and one who I have spoken with twice and dont really care to speak with again, no use for the guy.

went back and check the Conti web sight again and they recommend the 130/90 - 16 which has a load rating of rating of 805# for Ultra Classics.

hmmm was '04 the year they changed the belt design allowing for a little wider tire on the FLH's?
I saw the 04 but didn't look close enough to catch the > symbol. So I guess they are saying anything greater than (newer) than '04 takes the 140/90-16 then. I've got 'em and I'll probably run 'em a while but if I was a manufacturer I don't think I would be recomending them for the Ultra, Classic or even Standard. For a little ole Road King maybe they'd be ok though.

The weights of HD touring bikes are very close, most would have the same gross weight.
You have to count on the load rating, it is important. Just because a tire fits, doesn't make it the right one.
