I really think Springfield makes a great gun too. I have numerous custom 1911s, because that's what I collect. Custom pistolsmiths like Larry Vickers and Richard Heinie actually told me over the phone they wanted me to start with a stock Springfield because of the good steel and proper heat treatment. The guns are made in Brazil! I have both Vickers and Heinie guns built on Springfield base pistols, and they are fantastic. Amazingly, I was told to avoid Kimber stainless steel guns because the extractor often loses tension. They recommended replacing the extractor with a carbon steel one similar to what Ed Brown does on his stainless guns. That being said, the best 1911 out there is the one you have on you when you need it. I find myself carrying my Ruger LCP mousegun quite a bit because I can slip in a wallet holster and have it with me all the time.
I really like Vickers, Heinie, and Tibbets custom pistols. I have a C&S gun that's nice too. Semicustoms such as Ed Brown, Nighthawk, Baer, and Wilson Combat run like a custom gun at a cheaper price. But every now and then its nice to have one made just the way you like Bob

I have owned damn near every manufacturers 1911's and they are like Harleys to a certain extent. Everyone is going to have a different like or dislike. I've never liked Kimbers personally. I've shot a few and I didn't see that much of an improvement for the price difference. I have a Les Baer TR. It's a nice gun, but it was fit on the ridiculously tight end of the spectrum, almost as if they were over-compensating. My Nighthawk is my favorite gun my far. THe fit and finish were perfect. The slide feels like it's on roller bearings.

I've owned 2 Colts, a Para Ordinance, and now a Springfield "Loaded". The Springfield feeds far better than all the others, has a crisper trigger, and is a tack-driver.

Naa... I have a few of everything. I just ran across a deal on that safe queen. I usually only pick up uber rare guns, if I don't plan to shoot them. That one was just too good to pass up.

Some of you fellers probably don't realize how good we have it now.
Back in the late 70's-early 80's when I first got involved with 1911s, you bought a Colt. It was theoretically mil-spec, but their labor strife was legendary and mostly the guns were fitted poorly and what you had was a nice forged frame/slide "kit" to build something decent on. The unfortunate thing is, that never ended. Add that to ownership by an anti-gun investor for awhile, and that's what killed Colt as we knew it. Oh, and I recently had the opportunity to work on one of Colt's current 1911s. Still not impressed. On the upside, they are one of the few who make the mag catch to the proper dimensions so it doesn't overtravel when depressed and trap the mag in the well. Kimber used to, but no longer gives a crap, apparently

Nice pistol Don! I've heard good things about the STI 1911's. They seem to be pretty popular at the gun shows here due to their reputation and that they are made in Texas
