9/11 NYC Midnight Ride

IMG_3931.JPG

NYC tribute ride from Long Island City Harley-Davidson dealership to ground zero. Roughly 2,000 bikers showed up. All in all it was a great ride but a bit of a free for all at some points in the city, especially around Times Square.

It was both good and bad. Good was that NYC Harley was very organized and handed out american flags and zip ties to all riders (as well as blue tape to put over your license plates). Bad was about half the riders. Guys on sport bikes weaving around for no apparent reason, 1%'s walking around with hammers hanging off of their belts (I guess they are all carpenters as a day job).
Getting to ground zero and listening to one of the riders make a speech was moving, glad we were up front and were able to hear him.
In the future I can't imagine attending again. The ride only kicks off at 11pm and I'm not in a position to get home at 4am on a weeknight.

Maybe one time for the experience, but I doubt it.

My first ride with the late Fire 46 was as part of the final leg of the Torches Across America run a number of years ago. Staging for the last day was at a HD dealer in western NJ. Don't know how many bikes, just know that once out on the highway I could not see the front or rear of the column. Only estimate I heard was 'well over 1,000'. The ride was escorted and when we crossed the GW Bridge into Manhattan, from there until we passed Ground Zero (still just a hole in the ground at the time) and entered the Battery Park Tunnel, the intersections were closed and maned by NYPD.

The ride was much more controlled and for the most part a respectful and solemn demeanor from all of the riders.

Tom so the ride you did sounded like it was more organized and reserved. This was the complete opposite. I have no problem riding fast, but I prefer to not do it with a bunch of random strangers next to me. I was getting the feeling like I used to get at the race track where you are jockeying for position coming into a turn, trying to out brake the rider next to you.
I'm a bit older and wiser then I used to be and am more safety conscious now. Ok who am I kidding I love mashing the throttle and letting it rip lol
