Rode up near Sturgis back in 2006. Deadwood, SD. Made it in two days from Houston,... about 1380 miles. Got good early starts both days and stayed out of the heat of the day.

We went about 2 weeks before the rally and rode the Black Hills. Nice riding up there. Lots of beautiful countryside and wildlife. Deadwood was way cool.

BillyB's got the right idea about this.

Are y'all camping at one of the campgrounds in Sturgis? If you don't want to go with the Chip or Glencoe, there are several just off of the interstate that looked really good and would help avoid "city" traffic in the morning and evening.
We be old people and need our sleep, we are camping in Custer to avoid being right in the middle of all of the excitement. We will make at least one trip into Sturgis, just to say we were there, but will spend most of the time somewhere else.

I haven't ridden the black hills...
Now that would make for a great trip

Deadwood be fun. I would probably interested. For me its nice stopping off point before going west. Though after this year if all goes well, maybe going south next year. Grand Canyon? Though not sure if I am going to make Jasper Park this year.

I still say everyone should experience the rally once. It is something. For me it was a pilgramage.

I love going. Start seeing a few bikes, then more, and more. By the time you hit Sioux Falls bikes all over. Bikes roaring.

I recond taking the rally in atleast once, or more.

Also there is alot of great things to see in the area. I am sure there are a few us that could write something up.

True, an idiot has an IQ of less than 20 and the condition is commonly caused by a thyroid deficiency, whereas dOOfs only act like idiots somethimes.

I am with you there 8 Ball, crowds make me crazy and asshats drunk pulling wheelies, stealing bikes and law enforcement that loses its happy attitude for the duration of the circus tends to take all the fun out of it.

I'd rater ride out to the grand canyon and sleep in front of a campfire.

I am going up this year. Stu wants to see what all the fuss is about. I suspect this will be the last time. Going up a few days before the rally starts, then a couple of days into it to see the rally in full swing then get out of town quick!

Way too many people crammed into that area for me, and way too many first time, inexperienced riders to contend with.

Cool

Don't know if I'll ever make it back for the "Black Hills Rally", but I would like to make it back to Sturgis and do some more riding in that area...
...and the area from Meridian , ID to Sturgis, some nice riding between those two points!!!

I don't mind Crazy People, it's stupid people that I have a problem with! I didn't see anything that was too bad while I was there.

BTW: Lead, the Ponderosa Cabins... not too bad of a place to stay!
