2001 carb 88" compared to a 2003 FI 88"?
I have a 2003 FLHTI 88" engine and have a 2001 carb 88" engine available to me. Can I change that engine into my bike and the fuel injection? Basically, will the FI intake bolt up to the heads on the carb engine? This engine has 100K less than my engine..... And I can get it for VERY cheap!

Your bike has FI? Delphi?
Or if your bike has carburetor that will bolt onto the '03. Only thing in car land usually FI heads have smaller intake valves. Maybe research to see if carburetor twin cam heads have same size intake valves as a FI model.

I would say if the head part numbers are the same then you're good to go. Off the top of my head I don't know if the carbed bikes have the head temp sensor port, but I'm not sure.

As far as the FI vs. Carb goes, The engines are identical. The big difference between an 01 and an 03 is the bottom end bearings. The 01 still has the tapered Timkin on the primary side and the 03 has the roller bearing.
You'll need a temp sensor for the front head. Keep in mind now that your VIN numbers will differ. Make sure you carry a paper of some kind showing the origin of the different engine you're putting into your bike.

I remember when I asked my HD tech friend whether or not I could change my Delphi injected 06' FLHTI to carb'd, he said I would need a whole wiring harness to facilitate the change. I mentioned I saw a link to this change w/o changing the wiring harness shared on HDF a long time back. Their were some wires terminated and other wires had a variety of changes. If you were going this route, I would seek out the article for you, but your wishing to go Delphi. You still might need a whole new wiring harness. Their are some awful smart fellers out here however, and I recommend posting on HDF as well.
I think procuring a carb intake and mounting it on your new..ish engine would be a cheaper, better and easier match. BOB

My original post wasn't real clear, but my bike is the '03 that is fuel injected and I would attempt to convert the '01 engine to my fi bike if possible. Seems like I need to find out it the 01 has provisions for the temp sensor.
I can get the complete 01 bike if need be. Of course it has an ignition module issue along with a cracked swing arm. This bike has about 100K miles on it, but the engine "only" about 30K miles. Perhaps I'll just stick with what I have.....................?? Any my engine has the 100th emblem on it. Thanks one and all!

I have a fuel injected 01 and it has the temp sensor on the front cylinder so I would think the carbed bikes would have the threaded hole for the sensor.

Hey, if it's cheap, grab it!
I swapped Delphi injection from an '03 onto my '01 (Marelli injected) and everything fit between the years. The cylinder head temp is the ONLY thing I can think of that MIGHT not fit...but there's probably a kit to make it fit. And the '01s seem to run strong!

If the numbers don't match your resale value goes to shite and the dmv will give you a hassle

I'm thinking that the resale value on an 2003 that already has 140,000 miles is pretty much sheet as it is. Besides, it is my first Harley, I'll probably be keeping it..... And it is a 100th anniversary... Like that means anything....
Thanks again!
