Finger tip and thumb skin splitting...
My hands really go through the wringer in the winter. I tend to have split fingertips and thumbs as well. I learned today to superglue them prior to sleep.
I'll report back tomorrow.

My skin hates winter, and I do too. I apparently didn't move far enough south to avoid it completely.
I have found that this helps. Put it on heavy at night and all's well in the morning

My deepest sympathy to you- cracked skin hurts far out of proportion to the size of the wounds.
Advice from the land of frigid, dry winds: Soak your hands in warm water before applying moisturizer, lotion, unguents, salves, etc. Water moisturizes; the main function of the afore mentioned items is to seal in moisture.
