Humidification when the outside RH is way low in the winter months...

In my 50 stick humidors, two 2 oz gel jars per box keep them at 70% (w/ minimal opening).
In my 120 stick ones, a 4 oz and a 2 oz jar barely keep them at 65% (while they work fine in the warmer months), so I decided to go ahead and put in the rectangular ones that go on the lid, too. To my surprise, they weren't florists foam as expected, but were gel, too. I'd read where they had updated the instructions w/ the Humi-Care ones to only soak for 4 hours w/ distilled water instead of 12 hours, as the gel had been expanding to the point that it split the case. Well, I'll go one step farther and tell you go only soak them until they seem just short of full (i.e., the gel will still move a little when you shake it back and forth). At a little over 2 hours both of mine split, and they started out with only a little bit of dry gel in one corner!
Repaired and installed now, humidity is doing fine w/ them and one 4 and one 2 oz jar per big box.

The beads are fighting hard to keep the 100-stick at 65%, the 150-stick at 67%. I have no room to add any other humidification products.

I just filled the little packets from cigars.com and tossed them in to help keep 67 in both boxes

OK, I stuck a gel tube into both humis, and put them on the bottom to hopefully even everything out. Up to this point, I've been adding 2/3-3/4 of a syringe of water to each humi once a week. We'll see if the gel helps.

Do you keep your humidors outside?


Outdoor ambient Rh has nothing to do with indoor Rh.
Your heating system will probably drop that down to 20% depending on how much time it's running.


As much as hate to advise this...

You should really get your self a sling psychrometer so you can measure the actual water content of the air....

This way you can really beat the shit out of this subject with all sorts of essentially useless information.

Think of it...

You'll be able to use words like, dry bulb temps, wet bulb temps, enthalpy and psychometric charts with impunity.

No sling psychrometers here, thank you. I spent too many years using one of those things when taking weather observations - in freaking North Dakota, no less.

A guy Dave used to work with in the tower was playing with one once, slammed it into a counter and all the little mercury went flying. They had a big to-do over getting it cleaned up and now they're banned in all towers everywhere.
