Multi-part info request from a long-lost member!

Yes, it's long lost Lady G here to see if I can get some info and help from you.

PART 1:

I'm thinking of buying a vehicle from ebay motors, but I haven't done it before and wanted to see if anyone could give me any tips/info about the process, what to do/not to do, etc.

Obviously I've done my homework on what the vehicle is worth, and read up on as much stuff as I can, but it would be nice to hear from someone who's done it before.

My biggest question: Ebay's Vehicle Protection Plan says it won't cover DAMAGE on a vehicle over 10 years old, but does it cover basic things like paying for a vehicle and not getting it? The vehicle says it qualifies for VPP.

PART 2:

The vehicle is in Centreville, VA which is too far away for me to go see.

Is anyone near there that might be willing to go check out and drive the car for me?

Otherwise I was thinking of using ebay motors' vendor WeGoLook to check it out.

PART 3:

If I buy this vehicle I'm going to have to have it shipped to me.

Any recommendations on a good car hauler?

I'm not going to be able to help you very much except to urge great caution. I did have a friend who bought a Sportster that way and it worked very well.

I just have some concerns after hearing some of the scams out there.

Just proceed cautiously.

Ask a LOT of questions, everything you can think of as relates to the history of the car.
Ask for a LOT of pictures. Closeup pics of every paRT INCLUDING UNDER the car. Wreck repair folks make the shiny bits look perfect, but they never think anyone will look underneath. Wreck repair, rust, rust repair, repainting, frame straightening, new/recent parts installations, many of these will be evident viewed from under the car. Ask them to put on a lift and take dozen pics. Ask the new car dealer in the seller's town what they charge for their evaluation.
I sold a Mercedes (my boss') on ebay. The prospective buyer got a ton of pics, asked a lot of questions, he called MB with the VIN# and got service and warranty records. Local MB dealer charged (I think) $250 to inspect the car. The buyer risked that in order to help his peace of mind. We took it to the dealer. The dealer reported their findings to him. He arranged the transport but I can't recall the name.

Is the seller a dealer? Individual, original owner?
History makes all the difference.
If a dealer, or worse, if a "classic car" dealer, they will likely have an agreement to sign and a process in place. Some of them like Classic cars.com require a *non-refundable* deposit of a grand or more that you will not get back, before you can even test drive the car OR even before your hired gun can test drive it. I wanted to make an offer on a car; they are a consignment seller and they keep a barrier between you and the owner. they won't even tell the owner your offer until you give them the grand.
Find out what their policies are.
Something to consider: cars are just a commodity. especially late model cars. I can't think of any late model car that you couldn't find many copies of in your local area or region. If you have some time (that's key) to look around within driving-distance markets. If searching for a classic, with particular equipment, things get much dicier.

Their is a car in the back lot of my new employer that was purchased on E bay by a lady from Chicago. She spent all her money on the car and getting here to drive it back. The car had issues which the new owner couldn't afford to repair to drive so the owners of my shop bought it from her to help get back home. It would have cost the value of the car to facilitate the repair. One of our guys is working on it in his spare time.
