Shoppin' for new cams for the 'b'

Well, the 'b' ain't gonna be a DC CVO killer, but she will be somewhat better than dead.

'b' v3 will feature SE .010-over forged pistons (10.5 to 1 CR), Cometic .030 head gaskets, Andrews 54G cams, Feuling HP+ lifters, and manual compression releases.

Heads are getting new valves and valve guides. Upgraded springs, too, plus all the other stuff refurbed heads get. Machining has been finished for the MCRs, just waiting on those to arrive.

The cases have been reassembled with all new Timken bearings, seals and the Darkhorse repaired original crankshaft. Oh, yeah, she's getting a new cam plate and oil pump. Last but not least, she's getting a new stator. Nothing wrong with the old one, but it's got 45K miles on it and, with my luck, it'll fail in the near future. Why pay $700+ parts and labor later when it's apart now?

Waiting on the cams and pistons, which should be at the shop in a day or two.

Pistons will get fitted to the old jugs, which will get the torque plate re-bore and hone treatment.

Keepin' the V&H Dresser Duals and the Fulsac-baffled CVO mufflers. Ain't got the money to upgrade the exhaust right now.

With any luck, the 'b' should be re-assembled, broke in and tuned by the middle/end of next week.

I ain't lookin' forward to writing the cheque, but I am lookin' forward to seeing how she runs in her newest configuration.

I was seriously thinkin' about trading the 'b' off on a new Road Glide Ultra prior to this engine failure.

I'm gonna die with that scooter in my possession.

At least she'll be 'faster black'.......

Stators are a crap shoot. Some last forever, some don't last 15k.

While 45k is a little early, I can appreciate the "Replace it while your in there" thought. Better than spending a couple days in a hotel while your on the road for a replacement. BDTD..

Good luck on the build.. And don't sell it short. CVO's are NOT that fast. My old 05 with the 103 would take my current CVO.

All the waited for parts have arrived at the shop.

Got to see my new fancy S&S cam drive gears as he was prepping them for install.

They're pretty.



Tech figures the motor and bike will be final assembled and a few heat cycles run today.

More cycling tomorrow, maybe a bit of light dyno time tomorrow.

Looks like the 'b' will be home Monday or Tuesday, barring unforseens.

(Hope I didn't just jinx myself there. )

Oh yeah, he checked the runout on the rebuilt crank.

.001 or less at all the measuring points. Said he'd never seen one that straight/true before.

He uses S&S cranks as replacements when necessary. He was pretty impressed with the end results of the b's crank and looks to pass some work Darkhorse's way.

Oh, the stock head pipes are goin' back on, too. Tech says the 'b' will run better with those than the TDs. Besides, there's no money in the budget for a nice 2 into 1.

And baggers need twin pipes out back, just 'cuz.

So, I just happened to have a set off of an '07, with the o2 bungs already installed. Should make tuning a little more precisioner rather than just by sticking the probe up the pipe.

I can say that, right?

The 'b' came home last night.

100-ish miles on her new motor so far.

Gonna take some gettin' used to the whirring of the cam gears.

I like the compression releases, too. Shoulda put those in years ago.

Haven't been abusing her, just breaking her in as the owner's manual suggests.

She's loosening up nicely.

So far, so good.......
