New Road Glide (sorta)

Some of y'all may remember the headache I was going through trying to get my Deuce brought over here to Germany with me. Well, I finally gave up; it was going to cost me close to $4,000 to get it here.

Once I resigned myself that the Deuce would have to stay in TX (thanks for taking care of her, BigAl and Phreak), I looked into buying a bike here. I was NOT pleased. the prices were close to $1,500 above what you'd normally see back in the states due to the transportation costs the military car sales company charges here. And buying a used bike was out of the question; every time I found a Harley for sale in the paper, it was either over priced (by A LOT) or someone had already bought it by the time I called about it.

So, I went to Iraq with no bike to ride in Germany. I got home in January and the wife got tired of me griping about not being able to ride by March. Y'all wouldn't believe the roads over here. It's like they were made just for motorcycles! The Mrs. told me to shut the hell up, get the piss out of the house, and go buy a darn bike. So, I went back to the Harley dealer on base with some extra money from the deployment after the bills were paid off. I was ready to drop the coin on a Street Glide. Until I saw the 2008 Road Glide in person for the first time. YUM!!!

Talked with the dealer about the bike. He explained the differences to me compared to my Deuce. Never once mentioned price. Let me ride it around the lot. Did all the right things; he let the bike sell itself. Push came to shove and asked him about the price. He said he'd have to check the computer; I'm thinking, "Great, I'm about to be hosed!" He types and clicks away and asks me, "Are you familiar with the MSRP on a Road Glide?" I told him I was (Googled it on my iPhone while he was doing the computer thing). He then says, "You know that's a special bike, right?" Now I'm thinking I'm really gonna get hosed on the price. I asked him how it's special. He said it'd been in Germany since December of 2007 and 8 different people had put money down to buy it, but backed out of it and got their money back. He goes on to tell me that Harley REALLY wants to wash their hands of this bike. To the tune of $16,500. With a free 5 year warranty. No Taxes. Delivery paid for.

Needless to say, I bought her. And here she is...

Nice, Sparky! I am curious what was gonna cost so much to get your bike over there. When I had my Fatboy sent to me in England, I FLEW the bike from Atlanta to Frankfurt for about $1100. Rode it from Frankfurt to England and wham, was done.

Congrats on the new bike and the steal you got. Make sure that 5 year warranty covers you both overseas and here in the states......

Thanks! I've got some leave to burn at the beginning of next month. MANY miles are in my future and Bavaria and the Alps are on the top of the list for me!

I made a butt-load of phone calls trying to find something inexpensive in the way of getting the bike over here, but couldn't find anything close to why you paid. The warranty does cover both here and stateside. One of the first things I asked.

It sure is looking to be that way!

BTW, did you get your Tour Pack through HD, or is it an aftermarket type?

Congrats on the new bike. Don't tell anyone, but I'm a big fan of Road Glides. If and when you come back to Texas, we'll have to go riding.
