Whats a good carb cleaner now a days?
I got a nice little dirt bike for my kid.
A mid 80s DR-100. Been sitting a while. Took a look in the carb and found the fuel had turned into a solid, black gooey tar pit. The question is, what carb cleaner still works? What product will actully clean this $hit? I have a 5 gal pail of gunk at work and was not impressed with it's teeth when I did a couple of qudrajets in it. It seems that if a chemical cleaner actually worked like it used to, Some one would sue the paints off the mfg. Anyone know what product actually still works?

MEK. You can buy it in paint & hardware stores. Don't get it on anything you don't want dissolved.

B12 Chemtool. Likes to eat rubber so remove all seals and gaskets first but it will remove all varnish and crud. Do not get it on paint.

Here's what I use to remove varnish, goo, and crud off model airplane and helicopter engines:
Take an old crock pot, and fill it about 1/2 full of antifreeze. Put the parts you want cleaned in the crock pot, and turn it on "Low" for 24-48 hours. The parts come out looking brand new, it removes ALL traces of carbon and whatever else is baked on. I did this on a carb for a Cushman motocross bike, it removed all traces of grunge. it works!! |

I have found that anything that will burn the crap out of your hands when working with it is good stuff

I should add, do NOT use a crock pot that you will use for cooking food!! Go to a garage sale and buy a crappy one.

I wonder what chemical in there is responsible for the cleaning action? Are we talking ethylene-glycol based anti-freeze or the new "green" formulations? I have also used Berryman's B-12--it's good stuff too. I pulled up the MSDS for it and it seems to contain most of the ingredients we've been discussing, including some potential anti-freeze components. ============= Composition/Information on Ingredients ============= Ingred Name:VOLATILE ORGANIC CONTENT: 6.15 LBS/GAL RTECS #:9999999VO Ingred Name:LIGHT ALIPHATIC NAPHTHA, VM & P NAPHTHA, LACOLENE * 96-4 * CAS:64742-89-8 OSHA PEL:300 PPM ACGIH TLV:300 PPM Ingred Name:ISOPROPANOL (ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL), 2-PROPANOL, DIMETHYL CARBINOL (IARC CANCER REVIEW GROUP 3) *96-4* CAS:67-63-0 RTECS #:NT8050000 Other REC Limits:400 PPM OSHA PEL:400 PPM ACGIH TLV:400 PPM Ingred Name:ACETONE; DIMETHYL KETONE; 2-PROPANONE *96-4* CAS:67-64-1 RTECS #:AL3150000 Fraction by Wt: 23% OSHA PEL:2400 MG/CUM ACGIH TLV:750 PPM EPA Rpt Qty:5000 LBS DOT Rpt Qty:5000 LBS Ingred Name:TOLUENE (IARC CARC- GROUP 3) *96-4* CAS:108-88-3 RTECS #:XS5250000 Fraction by Wt: 17% Other REC Limits:375 MG/CUM OSHA PEL:100 PPM ACGIH TLV:100 PPM EPA Rpt Qty:1000 LBS DOT Rpt Qty:1000 LBS Ingred Name:2-BUTOXYETHANOL (ETHYLENE GLYCOL MONOBUTYL ETHER), BUTYL CELLOSOLVE, BUTYL GLYCOL, GLYCOL ETHER EB *96-4* CAS:111-76-2 RTECS #:KJ8575000 Fraction by Wt: 7% Other REC Limits:25 PPM (SKIN) OSHA PEL:50 PPM (SKIN) ACGIH TLV:25 PPM (SKIN) Ingred Name:METHYL ETHYL KETONE, 2-BUTANONE *96-4* CAS:78-93-3 RTECS #:EL6475000 Fraction by Wt: 5% Other REC Limits:590 MG/CUM OSHA PEL:200 PPM ACGIH TLV:590 MG/CUM EPA Rpt Qty:5000 LBS DOT Rpt Qty:5000 LBS Ingred Name:METHANOL (METHYL ALCOHOL), COLUMBIAN SPIRITS *96-4* CAS:67-56-1 RTECS #:PC1400000 Fraction by Wt: 20% Other REC Limits:200 PPM OSHA PEL:200 PPM ACGIH TLV:200 PPM EPA Rpt Qty:5000 LBS DOT Rpt Qty:5000 LBS
