Last call

Very bad news waited for us this morning. One of our local police officers, a good friend of my daughter's, died of suicide last night. As she said, he was the last one we thought would succumb to his demons. One more reason that I'm glad my daughter will be moving to a new career early next year. I am so proud of all she has accomplished in the last ten years, but the possibility of disaster is never far away. When she resigns, it will be the first time in my lifetime that I haven't had a close family member on the frontline in some branch of law enforcement.

It's always sad to lose one of our defenders.

Very sorry for your loss. It's unimaginable how frequently this is happening.

One of our neighbors who was a deputy sheriff at the time met the same fate a number of years back. He had a young family with two small children at the time. Everyone was shocked and surprised when it happened then too.

Those who protect and defend us, be it in some form of law enforcement or armed combat pay a tremendous emotional price for us. As a result, we need to do a much better job of taking care of them.

Danny was a good guy. A memorial service is being held in the local events center on Monday to accommodate all the people who are expected to attend. This community has always been particularly supportive of first responders, including law enforcement, but sometimes its just not enough.

IIRC he served overseas, before getting the job on the Casper PD ?

I don't know, Tom. He's been a cop ever since I've known him.

Danny had compassion for all people his entire life. Regardless of a person’s background or situation he was able draw them to him and into his group. People were attracted to his sharp sense of humor and genuine kindness for everyone he met. His goal was to always be active and have fun.

After graduating from the University of Wyoming, where he earned a degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology, he joined the Casper Police Department. His chief at that time mentioned that Danny was special and he could go very far in the force. The chief even mentioned he wouldn’t be surprised if Danny became Chief one day.

No one would've been surprised. Governor Gordon ordered flags flown at half mast for him on Monday.
