undusted

So, me and mrs. o have owned a '68 GTO convertible for a little over 25 years now.

Messed with it quite a bit, drove it, too.

But as time when on, and life got busy, there was less and less time for the GTO.

Finally, we got to the point of not even licensing her.

She sat in the garage the last 12 years.

Three weeks ago I got a little ambition, spent 8 hours going through stuff, like an oil and filter change, disassembled, cleaned and replaced the major gaskets in her Q-Jet, fresh fuel filter, pulled the plugs and squirted some Mystery Oil in each cylinder, turned the engine over by hand to make sure the engine was free, put in a new battery and pumped out the old fuel and replaced with fresh, and gave her a good looking over to get her road ready.

She's still got her original 400, a rebuilt T-400 with a custom converter, 3.23 rear gear with posi, power drums, power steering, tilt wheel, Hurst his and hers shifter, factory air (which still works), AM/FM multiplex radio, and hidden headlights.

How she looked then.......

How she looks now.......

The last two are bath only, no polishing or waxing......

We've managed to put a little over 250 miles on her the last few weeks and burned one full tank of fuel getting reacquainted with an old friend.

She runs and drives good. Gets down the road nicely, too.

One good looking ride.

My best fun ride was a 1968 Firebird. 350.

I always loved the Goat.. My grandma had one, but it wasn't a convertible. Very disappointed that while I was living in Alaska she passed away, and it was sold out of the family.

To say I was a little upset would be an understatement.

Nice ride Ken Sitting that long, maybe it time for new rubber?

I had a '67 442 convertible in high school.

This car is sort of a replacement of that.

Regarding the tires, yeah, they're old, but show no signs of cracking in the tread or dry rot in the sidewalls. I took time to really take a good look at 'em.

I kept those tires up to 40 psi as a rule and my garage is comfy cozy, even in the winter.

But, should they show signs of distress, they'll get replaced with new.

I'm pretty sure my grandmothers car was a '69 442.

I recall a solid black inside upholstery, and a dark green paint job.

I personally find your GTO to be one of the most timeless hot rods ever produced.
This, the 442, and Buick GNX. Nothing more to say here

Very nice!

Jealous...

Yeah, past five years after manufacture (build) tires are very suspect.
But I took care of a fleet of driven very fast, run over anything in the road fleet cars, so I am a bit touchy about tire health.
