Drive belt
Has anyone bought/installed a drive belt for any year/model HD lately?
I got an astounding piece of news at a neighboring town's dealership yesterday, Looking to find out what the going price is. |

Its a real PITA, you gotta pull the inner and outter primary and then the swing arm. When you do it I would go with the baddest strongest belt available so it last forever.

I am not in need of belts on either one, but this guy, thinking a Saturday Special employee, said $1000+ for belt/replacement labor charge, and older Evo bikes were another $300 or so. I about passed out.
Local dealer gave me a much more reasonable figure. It had been awhile since I checked, just couldn't believe it was anywhere near a grand. |

I have heard the $800 to $900 range mentioned by a couple guys at work.
Yes, it's some work, but not outrageous work. I'd be more than happy to retire and do a couple a week for $500 each.

the drive belt broke on my '06 Ultra last summer...the heavy duty belt from HD was something like $250...
a couple weeks before, a friend of mine found out about, and had a drive seal replaced by a guy that has a shop in Acme...about 15 miles away. he used to be a tech at Highlands HD... works alone...no employees the Gates heavy duty belt was $180...total cost(belt, gaskets, seal, labor) was a couple dollars over $400 dealer wanted around $140 to do the 1st svs on the springer front end on my Crossbones he charged me $40

I paid 125 online. I'm not home right now, so I don't have the bookmark available. Dealer price is around 200 bucks and the book calls for 4 hours labor. That would bring the cost to around 600 bucks including taxes.

If you do the research, obtain the needed sockets and make a primary drive locking tool, the belt change is do-it-yourself. It's really not hard.

Just did mine...what a pain in the ASS but it is doable... I had a Gates belt (supposedly EXTRA HEAVY DUTY) that lasted about 35-40k...I just happend to keep the original belt so my cost was $000.00. Thankfully it was in great shape...seems according to a few folks in the know they store well and "don't dry" out for a long time! Dealers in this area charge between 8-10 hours for replacement + the cost of the belt.

Can't be too hard if you did it with a claw hammer and crosscut saw...
