Radio

Well my third radio went south.

One of the things I looked at was the voltage spiking and causing the speaker drop out. I also considered an errant RF signal from the computer but I don't have a way of testing that.

I finally called and talked to one of the techs at Iron Cross Radio and it seems like it is a bike problem rather than a radio problem. One of the things he brought up was the size of the four head bolts just under the radio. He says it is a well known problem on the '07 and up bikes. Harley has a kit to replace those bolts with shorter head bolts, but the damage is done. They transmit more vibration to the radio and cause one of the boards to crack.

The fix is to send in the radio for repair. They can pretty well tell what is causing the damage from indications on the case and internally.

They will also stay on the phone with you the whole time you install the radio to check other possible issues. Great folks.

I just don't want to spend another three or four hundred dollars on a radio right now. I need to double check my headset because it would work on the last radio. It is just the speakers that drop out. If the headset works, I'll just stick with that for the time being.

But how will the Cloud Riders know when it is time to leave?

Last time you posted about this I thought I steered you to Iron Cross and this issue, searched but didn't find the thread.

Oh! Just found this...

http://www.ironcrossaudio.com/

Saw something on another site about there being some kind of HD service bulletin about the bolts hitting the radio chassis, how ICA (Iron Cross Audio) told them about the bulletin, but unable to locate it at ICA, I guess more google fu is needed.

OK, HD service bulletin M1289...

More on the M1289 service bulletin

This also applies to 2006 and forward Harley's with HK radio issues:

>The purpose of this bulletin is to inform dealers of a running change to the fastener used to secure the handlebar clamp to the risers. For all 2011 Touring models built approximately on or after October 7, 2010, a new fastener, (Part No. 12600003), is being implemented in all four locations on the handlebar clamp. On all 2011 Electra Glide Touring models equipped with the Advanced Audio System, the new fastener will provide additional clearance between the two forward handlebar clamp fasteners and the radio chassis. Lack of clearance at this loca-tion has been determined to be a major contributor to CD skip and other audio system concerns.<

>On 2006-2011 Electra Glide Touring models equipped with the Advanced Audio System, if a customer has concerns about CD skip, inspect vehicle for contact between the handlebar clamp screw head and the radio chassis. If contact exists, re-move the radio, replace the two forward handlebar clamp fasteners (there will be no kit, the dealer will be required to or-der two Part No. 12600003 screws) and reassemble following service manual procedures.<

>NOTES
• This repair is valid on all 2006-2011 Electra Glide Touring models equipped with the Advanced Audio System, (in-cluding CVO). However, it is only warrantable if vehicle is within its factory warranty.
• The new fastener utilizes a Torx™ head. It will be neces-sary to use a different tool for installation.<

They have to let their technicians know the six sided socket, that was used to remove the hex head bolt, won't work on this fastener...

My brother fixed his failed computer once by picking it up and shaking the shit out of it.

Maybe worth a try......

That sounds sort of like a sexiest locker room comment...

Don't touch the buttons in the wrong manner.
