shovelhead primary help needed

so the shovel that I was going to buy was taken apart by the son of the owner to replace the stator, I have most of the parts back together again, but I am not sure about fluid in the case? the clymer manual sucks, I don't see any lines coming into the primary, but the clutch plates were dry? any hints as to where/what/how this is supposed to be set up?

If i remember correctly, there is a fitting on the inner primary, just ahead of the chain tensioner, that fed oil from the motor into the primary, then back to the oil tank. It was quite common to block this off and add oil manually, so contaminants from the primary didn't find their way back into the engine.... this may be why you don't see any lines.

apparently stoney reads good, the bike is a 3 oil line convert, so I am just going to put fluid in up to the bottom of the clutch basket...hell it ain't my bike anyway!

Were they relatively new? Did someone assume since it was a '78 that it had a shared primary and never put any oil in there? The clutch will work fine, but the chain and adjuster shoe will get thrashed.

Actually, it's common practice to soak those disks in some Type F tranny fluid before installing. It helps establish an even level of friction on them, rather than waiting for that small amount of primary oil to migrate onto each one.

they looked pretty new, the chain was "moist", nothing dripping, and there seemed to be a film of oil on the adjuster, I think they took the bike apart over the winter, but they had no idea how much came out, they thought gasoline came out of there.....!!you have can make this chit up!!!

If it'd been run w/out oil, it would have eaten the shoe and chain in short order--ask how I know this.... It just needs enough oil to touch the bottom of the clutch shell. Anymore and it'll act funky.
