Saw this trick...
In issue 307 of American iron.
They used a pump oil can to "prime" the tappets. So I gave that a try with an old tappet I had laying around. Put the tip of the oil can on the feed hole and pump away until oil flows out of the push rod cup. Worked pretty good. Now just try buying a pump oil can like this…

I always soak mine in a can of oil to get the air out.

I tried finding this can on the Mac Tools website today, I guess everything is aerosol nowadays.
That one I have is over twenty years old.
