Bois d'Arc
A very good yellow lab made his way over the rainbow bridge this evening, taking a big piece of our hearts with him.

I found this poetically written passage online and cannot figure out who to credit this to, the author appears to be unknown. This is one of the most eloquently written passages I have ever read regarding what a four-legged pet might say to their owner who is faced with deciding (and may know it is time to) whether to putting them to sleep. Feel free to pass this along to others, as I already have.
Here is the passage directly quoted as I found it, written as if a pet is speaking these words: “If it should be that I grow weak and pain should keep me from my sleep, then you must do what must be done, from this last battle can’t be won. You will be sad, I understand, but don’t let grief then stay your hand. For this day more than all the rest, your love for me must stand the test. We’ve had so many happy years; what is to come can hold no fears. You don’t want me to suffer so the time has come, please let me go. Take me where my needs they’ll tend. But please stay with me till the end to hold me close and speak to me, until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you will agree – – it was a kindness done for me. Although my tail its last has waved, from pain and suffering I’m saved. Please do not grieve that it was you who had this painful thing to do. We’ve been so close, we two, through the years. Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

Thank you, Mike.
Bo had a stroke in January of 2017, a very rare event in the dog world. I sat with him for several hours back then, sure that each breath within his coma would be his last. All of sudden, he opened his eyes and returned to us, albeit as a shadow of his former vigorous self. We have been fortunate to have had an extra 15 months with this great dog and had only recently begun to think perhaps it was time to call the vet. He lay down this evening and very quietly left on his own like the gentleman he was.

It's a sad day but I guess it was time.

Thank you. The nice folks from the animal crematorium came by yesterday and got him. They'll bring his ashes back by next week. Really glad that service is available here.

RIP Bo.
A bit of the ashes from our white lab rests in a vial hung from a chain from the rear view mirror in my truck. I know your pain. BTW, some 17 years ago our first lab had a series of strokes on her way out of this world. Scary stuff.

Thank you.
This is the first time in over thirty years that we haven't had a lab or lab mix living with us. The two remaining dogs are a blind diabetic farm collie and a Swedish Vallhund who is my almost constant companion. My son has a half-grown black lab to continue the tradition. Nothing like a lab.

Much love and compassion from here. I had been without a furry companion for 22 years, and rescued a small dog just over a year ago, and am heartbroken I had to rehome him for this new tech job I just acquired. A most wonderful women across town adopted my little Scooby. I do get visitation rights and he will still get scooter rides.
