Fe Butte

You drive I-80 fairly frequently. Have you seen the book in this article?

Haven't seen the book, but I know that section.

Wyo DOT installed some changeable speed limit signs some years ago after an "important" family from the Denver area were returning from a ski trip, doing the speed limit in a white out snow storm. Their Subaru spun out on the packed snow/ice, IIRC someone in a 4X4 pickup struck their car into the path of a semi-truck and all were killed, and the pickup driver was charged with negligent manslaughter.

Yeah a car stalled sideways in the middle of the highway in a blowing white-out snow storm. Everyone driving 65 plus should be able to see that. I can't recal if it was after sundown or daylight hours.

Then there was the time I riding home from ES or Sturgis and I stopped at the Laramie HD store was talking with a local rider and when I said I was Westbound on I 80, he started telling me how dangerous the upcoming passes I was going to encounter were quite scary, especially Elk Pass. You'd have thought I was telling him I was part of the Donner party heading West into a snowstorm...

Forty years ago, I drove my VW bug across that section of freeway headed east in a ground blizzard. Finally found myself a semi, got behind it, and prayed the driver could see the road better from his height than I could from mine. Did not dare try to stop an wait out the ground blizzard. It was only January and I didn't have enough peanut butter to last until April.

Thirty plus years ago drove that section West bound in the '67 micro bus.

One of the heater box linkages became detached after leaving Denver and being the end of November we froze, except for the small bit of heat produced by the remaining heater box, coming out of the finger thawing outlets near the top of the dash.

When we arrived in CA I crawled under and wired the heater flaps wide open, would rather suffer too much heat in the bus and have to crack a window open crossing WY back to Denver with it in the minus temps outside.

Driving across WY in a VW micro bus will hone your driving skills in some cross "breezes"...

Even when my VW heater was hooked up, it was less than efficient. I used to drive with one hand and scrape the windshield with the other. I had to hold my breath to shift so the windshield wouldn't immediately ice over.

Good times with VW but I do love the heating system in my Camry.

In the older bugs, I would put a sweeper hose from one of the back vents (at the bottom of the rear seat) and with a small metal sweeper attachment it made a rather nice defroster while also moving some more heat up to the front of the cabin.

If all the linkages were adjusted correctly, and the hoses from the fan house were good and tight along with the ones leading into the cabin, the VW produced very good heat.

But alas many "VW" mechanics did not have the knack or patience for doing that correctly. Kind of like adjusting Ford mechanical brakes in the correct adjustment order and lubing all the linkage pivot points.

The heater (when I had one) worked okay after I'd been driving awhile but that first twenty minutes or so could be pretty chilly.

Over the 30+ years I owned my 1969 VW bug, it had four engines. I paid a friend to do rebuild the original engine and he didn't want to be bothered with hooking up the heat even though he knew I was moving to snow country. He stuck tennis balls in a couple of places in the engine to block off heat vents. Very efficient. The second time I bought a rebuilt engine which hadn't been rebuilt very well and had to be replaced, fortunately while still under warranty. I did have some heat on the rebuilds.
