What model is that you're using to tempt Geezer?

That'd be an R1200CLC. I think they ceased production around 2006, so it's got the old single-cam engine. I'd like to try one, looks like it'd be fun.

So now that Helga the Flying Pig has 7,000 miles on her, and I've spent some serious seat time on her, I have an update.
To the burning question of our time....Is it as comfortable as a Harley Touring bike on a long trip? Well....... That's a tough one. After 11 days and 5,400 miles I'm sore. I'm sore-er than I've ever been after a long ride on the BSL. But to be fair, I'm not in the physical shape I was in prior to the wreck, and this is also the biggest trip I've ever done (ES last year was around 3,600 IIRC). There's also the issue of fuel capacity. Riding at highway speeds 2-up on the BSL, I needed gas right at 180 miles. HtFP will easily go 320 miles with her 9-gallon tank. Quite frankly, I don't think I did my butt or my knees any favors by riding 4-1/2 hours straight, over and over. So truthfully, I think they're both pretty comfortable over the long haul, with a slight edge to the Harley, primarily due to the option of having your feet in multiple positions thanks to footboards and highway pegs. Though it's amazing what 20 seconds of standing on the pegs does for comfort. When I wasn't droning along at highway speeds, the bike was good for nearly 460 miles per tank, and that's including flogging it up and down the mountains. Power, braking and handling are superb. Unfortunately, as I demonstrated on Monday, power wheelies are ridiculously easy, especially with a passenger. With both tires planted on the ground, it's ridiculously stable through high-speed corners. The short wheelbase makes easy work of clipped switchbacks, and the brakes allow you to power far deeper into corners than you'd think. I've had this bike way over and nothing's dragged. My chicken strips are about 3/8", and I think I'd probably run out of tire before any hard parts touched the ground. And damn it's tough. The whack the bike took out in the desert would have bent and broken the front end on a Harley. HtFP just shrugged it off. So yeah, I'm still pleased with my decision.

Watch out for the prairie dog holes on the dirt roads...
Is the radio still working?, my display went out since Mokie Dugway.

It apparently caught quite a bit of air coming out of the rut.

Hey, there's a dirt bike just like yours in the parking lot today. No saddlecoffins, though.

I've never ridden up the Moki Dugway before, always down. Up seemed much rougher. Maybe something to do with the shape of the washboard surface. Radio is under warranty. Took the motorcycle to the dealer yesterday. They simply ordered a new radio without checking anything. Said, "They all do that." 460 miles on a tank of gas? Boy, I could get some serious miles in a cross-country run. That would have made Indy to Dallas a one-stop trip! We usually do 190 to 210 before stopping on our 6 gallon tanks. |

Nice review on your BMW. It's hard to compare an Ultra to a first class dual sport. I guess in a perfect world we could have one of each of them.
I forgot to mention the 9 GALLON GAS TANK and 460 miles between fill ups. I got one word for that, thatfriggin'rocks!
