Does the transmission fluid also oil the clutch basket. I have a cover over the chain and tire sprocket. It has a rubber boot that is mounted to the side of the primary...I have not torn it down yet...but...I am getting transmission oil in the chain cover....when I ride...which over fills the chain cover...is the transmission oil sealed in the transmission and does not oil the clutch ...if so then a seal is leaking or is there a seal or something that is supposed to prevent the transmission oil from leaving the primary into the chain cover that is leaking?

I believe an '84 has a dry clutch...sounds like the transmission seal is leaking.

My 84 softail had a wet clutch. Don't know about the 84 baggers--only old dudes rode them back in 84. But I agree the tranny seal is toast.

Well, hell, what do I know? My '83 FXRS had a dry clutch...But, now that I think of it, the models with the sealed drive chain DID have a wet clutch.

I have no positive input.

I am simply reading the thread, and compulsively began typing.

I'm with him.
Thought I heard someone say free beer.

The only nearly intelligent thing I can say is that the 81 FXE had
dry clutch with belt primary drive.

If you know the fluid is from the tranny, then the seal has gone bad.

Otto has failed to amuse us
unforunatly in 84 they could of been either wet or dry on the clutch early dry late wet but that enclosed chaindrive is a pitA to get to seal if it is a early rope version the later one used a real seal on the sprocket, the inner primary uses a sealed bearing with no seal but the trans should be sealed watch what it is as i comes apart there are some 1/2 year spec parts in thereso i recommend buying a Factory FLT service and parts books have a trusted dealer (yea right) run the vin to find actual production date. they should be able to tell if its a early or late. good luck
