Been a while and it was rifle cartridges. Fired once and I would load twice more. New brass three times. Thats just what I did. My buddy would load more times and I've seen his 6mm crack a few cases, usually at the neck.

Yup, three total was my limit. Each reloading has a different feel as the case becomes a bit more pliable.

My gunsmith neighbor Tom agrees- 3 should be the limit- EXCEPTION- What Tom calls "hot loads" custom loaded rounds (fresh brass) that have been taken to the limit of what the case can handle powder-wise, with high performance powders for long range trajectory bullets. (I.E. "reach out and touch someone rounds") He feels that the case has been 'blown out' (expanded) by the firing, so should not be re-used as they have an alarming tendency to jam up in the breech.
He knows way more about firearms than I do, so I'm takin' his word for it.

With pistol rounds, as long as you're loading light, target loads, I keep shooting and loading the same brass until I get a cracked mouth or see evidence of incipient case head separation. I've got brass I've been reloading since I was 18.
Or, you know, you can just ship it to me after you've loaded it twice.

I lose my 45 brass in the grass before it's worn out. Search the interweb and you'll find a good Dillon somewhere close. I cherry picked a used square deal with two calibers and all the bugs worked out, that and a single stage press and
, and, and, and . . . .

As we are in the desert of sparse ammo once again, am looking into reloading, that is if you can find primers, powder and new brass.
So a Dillon 550 C looks like a press I will search out, then the other things I will keep an eye out for in my travels of the LGS's in my new home state, and purchase when I see them. Was going through my cans of ammo to refill a magazine with and came across a Remington box of .45 ACP that was price tagged $12.95, sure wish those days were back.

December of 2019 I finally bought a reloading press kit. Then Covid hit and I haven’t been able to find anything else that’s required. Dies, brass, bullets, etc. Good luck Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

I've been seeing bullets here and there in the size I'm looking to reload, saw some H4198 on the shelf at a gun shop and other powders, primers are still hit and miss. Brass is available for rifles in those smaller sizes.
Now to find a press and other thingies. Dillon or Lyman...? ![]()

Maybe I'll go all caveman and start with a Lee hand loader?

Folks knock them, but that’s what I got. Traded a pistol I had for it. It is a progressive, but I skip the priming mechanism because that’s where shit goes south on the Lee I have. I decap on a single stage, then clean with an ultrasonic cleaner. Then hand prime and then size and dump powder, seat bullet on the press. I found some of my .45 brass had bulges from Glocks and other guns without fully supported brass when in the chamber. I started using the Lee factory crimp die and now I use one on every pistol cartridge I load. That die will correct a cartridge that won’t pass a case gage and set a perfect crimp every time. |

Buuuuuuut......A single-stage press forces you to pay attention. If your're making match-grade ammunition, this is what you want to do.

So on my future dream list, either a Dillon RL 550c or a Lyman Brass Smith All American 8?
