Harley Davidson opts out of Rapid City civic center
One of the first opportunities to see and demo ride the new models each year has always been there. They scaled back the display last year at the civic center and moved it outside into a couple of large tents. This year they're packing their tents and moving to a location off of exit 30 at Sturgis. There were quite a few vendors that occupied adjoining areas at the civic center that will likely try to follow. More details here.

So, is this a good thing? For Sturgis, I mean?

I suppose it's good for Sturgis, but the traffic up there sucks. The bikes are backed up a mile or more on the 2 exits already without another added attraction. I'll hit it very early in the morning.
I'm guessing the moco has an even smaller events budget this year. The RC civic center was a very nice venue for this, sad to see it moved from there.

This might have something to do with it...
Harley operations under review, profit down By Rick Barrett of the Journal Sentinel April 20, 2010 12:30 p.m. Harley-Davidson Inc. (HOG) says its first-quarter profit fell 71%, and the company continues taking actions to control costs - including a review of its Milwaukee operations. In an earnings announcement, Harley CEO Keith Wandell said business conditions will remain challenging throughout the year. In an interview, he said: "We are reviewing every operation that we have, whether it's our product development center, factories or what we do here on Juneau Avenue, to make sure that we are focused" on a strategic plan. "In no way is it intended to be mean spirited," Wandell said, "but we are taking a look at where we have room for improvement." In the quarter ended March 28, the company earned $33.3 million, or 14 cents a share, down from $117.3 million, or 50 cents, a year ago. Excluding losses from discontinued operations, Harley earned 29 cents a share. Analysts expected Harley to earn 22 cents a share on $1.02 billion in revenue. Revenue fell 19% to $1.04 billion.
