But it doesn't need to be on when starting. My *****, the headlights ran through the start button, when you pushed it in the contact broke. So they were not on during starting.

They sure don't hurt. But I have never used one. I just put my battery in the house, during the winter. I try to put a trickle on it once during the winter.
But they sure don't hurt. The best thing for your battery is riding it. |

I guess I am illegal then. I removed the jumper wire on my "93 Heritage. the switch has two positions, one for ignition and a second for lights also.
On my "99 EG, since I do not use my Acc switch, I moved it and rewired it to turn the lights on and off. Hate starting a bike with the lights on. I do not believe it is illegal. Federal law required they be made and sold in that configuration, constant on headlight, but but not all state laws, ID, UT , AL to name a few, require you to ride with a headlight on and those are the ones who enforce the headlight law. |

It is illegal here, I should have stated "in some states". My police RK had a switch and also had a red light in the nacelle that came on when the light was off. It is HD police equipment and is used by police in certain states.(like Fla, where my bike came from)

In those days, there was a very obvious green wire looped around behind the ignition switch that simply needed to be snipped to give you the "lights or not" choice...

Bought a new FX in 1975 and it cost me a 12 pack for the dealer to show me that.

I snipped the wire on my old Sportster and then got pulled over by the Wyoming Highway Patrol for no headlight on. He gave me a warning and said that I am in the system now for being warned and the next time I would get a ticket and if my memory serves me right the fine was around $250.00 so I re-hooked the wire just in case I accidentally forgot to turn the key to the lights on position again.

I like having my passing lights on all the time. My 01 PO wired it that way, you can turn off with switch. Need to do it on my 07.
I have no desire to ride with my light off, but would be nice, if battery was low and trying to start. I have thought about a good industrial switch under the seat to kill the lights, more for evading law enforcement. But I would probably get myself in trouble thinking he will never see me here. Ya right. |

One of these days I'm going to dig into mine and find the circuit for the headlight. All it needs is a relay tied to the starter circuit that will shut off the headlight during starting.

Lost a Stator 40 miles from anywhere. Being able to run without lights is all that got me into the next town. An old EVO will run for a long time on the battery if all you have to power is the ignition. I do not believe a modern TC with EFI would go very far even without the lights on. Too much electronics being powered with the EFI, the Fuel pump and injectors.

Can't remember whats on what, but couldn't you just pull the fuse for the ligths? In an emergency you could disconnect it too, take about 20 minutes.
