yea me to, but didn't want to drop the $80 for a new cable then turn around in a few months and drop much more for braded clutch/throttle cables and brake lines. He says it will work, just cant run it up through fairing, will have to run up between fairing and tank. Looked at it after I put the bars on and think it will be fine that way for a while... if not it's not the end of the world, I'll just have to go back and drop the $80 and do it right.

BBBBBBAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so freaking frustrated right now!

took the ignition switch out yesterday per the manual, but forks stayed locked, couldn't figure out how to unlock with ign. out, put it back, figured out I could pull the ignition out with the knob in the off position, did it 3 or 4 times to make sure I was doing it how I thought I was, and it worked fine... fast forward to today.... inner back on everything wired back up in some semblance of what it looked like when I started everything is going beautifully, slip knob in ingition, turn key and remove it, turn knob, something inside not turning 'right' try a couple more times, same results, start messing with orientation of knob and detents inside, now I cant even get the damn knob back in... been at it for an hour now

all I need to do is get that back in, make sure all wiring is good then slap on outer and windshield, wipe it down and I'd be done no NNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

wow just noticed a post of mine begging for help got stickied, not sure of the honor of that

I give up on ignition guess I'm going to break down go to dealer tomorrow morning and buy the tool to line it up, I've been trying each position for 1 1/2 - 2 hours, starting to wonder if I broke something

ah well, everything else went back together pretty smooth guess something was bound to go bad

Time to stop, walk away for awhile and then come back to it later. That always seems to help me.

I'll swing by the dealer in the a.m. and pick up the special tool when I take Kristine to school. Was hoping to wrap it up this afternoon but after walking away a while and thinking of everything I did.... I can't remember tightening the 4 bolts on the radio so I will pull the outer off and double check that tomorrow to.

Les, that looks sweet. Not to tell ya what to do.............but.......

as long as you are in there, replace all dash light bulbs.
Also, use dielectric grease on every connection. My ultra
is an '07, and I had green corosion on the connector for
the spot, spkr, cruise, and acc. switches.

Dash bulbs on mine were amber bulbs. I just used 194A bulbs.

good idea, might as well replace those when I go back into it to check the radio. anybody know what type of bulb is in the high beam/neutral/turn signal indicators? might get them while I'm in there to... my high beam indicator has been off and on for a while now

yea I know 27 days and ticking... I was planning on waiting to do this inner fairing till next year or so, then messed up one of the inserts where the windshield mounts so got another inner to get painted but still planned on waiting till after ES just in case problems came up. It got painted so fast and looked so good I just couldn't wait! Glad I didn't cause it went easier than I ever expected it to... except for the ignition switch issue... which should probably work out ok once I get the special tool to line it up... don't know though... cant see what that tool can do that I cant do with screwdriver or by raising the knob and turning it that way... maybe it does something special I dont understand yet to line it all up. Put on pullback bars and they feel SWEET when I set on it and go vroom vrooom vroooom! only thing I'm not completely pleased about the bars is that I cant put my fairing mount mirrors back on, will have to put the chome stalk mirrors back on blleehhh!

yea this ^^^ is me now. found a thread across the street that helped me figure out how to get steering locked then align the switch with the steering lock and it worked yyyeeeeaaa!

After I got it back in, turned to off, pulled it back out put it back in 3 more times and it worked great each time... not sure why it got out of phase between last yesterday when I pulled it in the off position and today the first time I put it back in, but its done now so I don't even care, just glad its back in and I know how to sync it up right from now on.

So missing ES due to not being able to put in an ignition switch is no long a worry

only issue with it all now is spots arent working right at the moment, they are my blinkers as well as spots, they still blink when using blinkers but wont turn on like normal, think maybe a wire came loose in a plug, or maybe my soldering job on that wire failed... have to check that tomorow when I check the radio mount and replace the gauge lights. Will put up some pictures of the finished job in the daylight tomorrow.

OK learned something new today. If you forget to plug in the switches under the fairing cap, your bike will start and function normally, your stereo will play, all will seem right with the world except your spots wont work. Should have noticed the lights were not working on the switches themselves last night but guess I was rushing. Anyway, all tightened up, plugged in, plugs greased, lights replaced etc. etc. FINISHED. no pics of it now though as I finished it started raining on me, so no riding it to work tonight after all. well there's a few hours till time to leave for work, maybe it'll pass.

Les,

Glad you got it all back together...

Borrowed the info from down the street... now its here...

He's a member here too.

Mike

From Flyin Brian

Ray, you've already received a few replies on the other postings you had on this, but in-case you didn't see them I will help here.

First, don't worry about that tool, it's a waste of $120 bucks! All you need is a flashlight and a medium to large flat blade screwdriver.

1) Make sure the forks are to the left and locked. If they are not locked, turn the forks left and then stick the screwdriver all the way to the bottom and turn it left while jiggling the bars on the left stop until the forks lock.

2) Look in the hole with a flashlight. You will see the switch plate half-way down the hole, this is what turns when you move the ignition switch to on, run and accessory. Make sure the tabs on the switch plate are lined up like in this photo:

If the tabs aren't lined up properly you will need to line them up using the screwdriver. Stick it in part-way until it contacts the switch plate. Line it up so the slots are lined up at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock when looking down in the hole.

3) Insert the switch assembly. Place the spring on the shaft and insert the lock in with the lock pointed towards the "fork lock" position. Make sure the key is still in the keyhole and turned all the way to the left 60º. Refer to this photo:

4) If you've got it aligned properly, the lock will bottom out all the way in and you need to hold it in with your hand and turn the key to engage the locking tab that holds it in:

5) Now the switch should be in with the forks locked. Re-insert the key and unlock the forks like normal. Go for a ride!!!

Good Luck!!

Thanks Brian!!!

All done and I couldn't be any happier! Think I still need to go back and get two more small rings for oil pressure and air, future oil temp gauge, and also for the radio faceplate trim, have to get them tomorrow I guess.
