A note on mountain riding manners
Thinking about the East Coast Doofapalooza coming up, I was reminded of something that happened at the last one down in the Smokies, and thought it deserved mention.
Mountain curves aren't everybody's thing. We get that. Some folks just don't tear 'em up. Which is fine, ride your own ride and all that. That being said, there is usually only one (if that) place per mountain where it's flat enough and straight enough for the road to widen out and accommodate a passing lane. If you've been going maybe a wee bit slower than all those folks in front of you who disappeared from sight 10 minutes ago, and all those 30-40-50 cars and bikes in your mirrors backed up behind you, you might want to consider going at the same pace you were in the curves and staying in the right lane so folks can get around you. Getting in the left lane and nailing it so nobody can pass when you're just going to become a rolling roadblock again at the first curve is, well, kind of rude.

But that's how is is ALWAYS done in Appalachia....
Trust me. And it don't matter what you're driving, car, bike, coal truck, the unwritten rule is get to the 4 lane and drop the hammer, and slow down again once you're back on 2 lane, no matter if you're back in curves/hills or not. Have I mentioned I love Texas? AND the mostly courteous drivers here?

Plus, if you're tentative in the curves you probably shouldn't try to position yourself in the front of the group.

Russ, Ricky and I took off ahead of the group heading out Million Dollar highway from Durango. We came up on a rolling roadblock in a Subaru who thought it was her duty to slow traffic down to about 10-15 under the speed limit. As soon as we got a spot to pass(which was after falling the twit for about 3-4 miles) we jumped out around her, she let us all know we were number one as we passed.
