The mystery of disappearing coolant
Last Friday I decided to ride to Louisiana for the hog rally and to eat about 50 lbs of mud bugs. I don’t get 25 miles from home before I notice the engine light and coolant light both lit up on the dash. With only 3500 miles n the 2019 Limited, I thought maybe it’s not a good idea to ride the other 400 miles, so I turned around and rode to the dealer.
Explain the problem, and they took the bike right in. I was disappointed because it was such a beautiful day to ride. Anyway they call me about 90 minutes later and tell me it’s fixed. I asked what the problem is and they said low coolant level. They said they topped it off, did a pressure check, blah blah blah, didn’t find any leaks. I asked where the coolant went, and the said there were no leaks, must have been low from the factory. Ok, fine. So I ride it the 24 miles home and park it so I can try to get to the HOG rally again on Saturday. Nope, biblical rains arrived overnight, I ain’t riding anywhere. Out of curiosity I take a look at the coolant bottle in the right lower and it’s bone dry. No puddles or drops on the floor of the garage. So Monday I call the dealer and sarcastically ask if I should ride over so they can top it off again. They said no. Don’t ride it. They’ll send a trailer over to pick it up. Haven’t heard back from them yet Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

Is this a bad time to say I like my oil/air cooled Vic?

Damn dude, that suchs big ones. I hope it’s a simple fix. I’m already missing my 06’ and will have another (02-06’) before long. I already miss the long distance comfortable cruising. I’ll keep the FJ-09 as my go to unicycle.
Keep us posted on the fix BOB

Maybe the trailer lost it's coolant.
Hope the really do put a pressure tester on the system this go around.

Dealer just called and they’re bringing the bike back. No idea where the coolant went. Claimed they topped it off, pressure tested, checked the oil then rode it for 30 miles and level stayed the same.
Oh yeah, the tech found a kink in the hose that connects the overflow bottle. He thinks that may have caused the problem. Um,.....okay I’ll put 300 miles on it this weekend and see if it stays the same

Does the overflow bottle flow back and forth like most cars do?

This would be my guess. In such a situation, the inability for heated/expanded coolant to travel to the overflow bottle would likely force it to 'exit' the system somewhere else.

IIRC, (would have to go RTFM(mine)) but the tank in the lower is a pressure tank with a over pressure discharge hose.
But thanks for the answer, if you run low on coolant the bike will throw a warning of some kind.

Almost sounds like a bypass thru cylinder and blowing out of exhaust.??

It's back home now, coolant level looks like this. Not exactly topped off, but close enough for government work. We'll see how it looks after 150ish miles tomorrow.
