Rolling Thunder 2018

Hey gang!

I got an invite to join a group to join the Rolling Thunder ride this year. I've never been and would like feedback from those who have?
Is it worth it? What's it all about?

If you are from N.E. Ohio, did they say where they meet up with the Rolling Thunder Group? What are the dates? How soon to register? Got room for anymore riders?

Sure would like to do this once, but I ain't getting any younger.

I live here and have done it the last few years with the Granddaughter. It is somewhat of a parade now but the massive size of uit does have some aweness. We ride with and HD group into the Pentagon with about 5k bikes and they usually stage us up in the front half or so. If your in the back half it can take 3-4 hours after the first bike rolls out at noon for you to roll.

There is no registration. There is usually 400-500k motorcycles. Depending where you are staged, it could be several hours before you get out of the Pentagon parking lot. You could get there at 7/8am and the parade starts at 12 or 1pm. If you have never done it, it is something to see/do. People line the streets and wave. I don't know if they have changed it but when we did it, you didn't have to wear helmet during but are required to put it on after the parade. There are usually vendors, food and outhouses in the parking lot. Usually hot that weekend so bring sunblock. It is pretty cool to see large groups from all over ride the freeways/highways headed in.
I was glad we did it. But now we park in an adjoining lot and walk in and watch the start of the ride. Then get out of there.
You should do it to be able to say you have, it is cool.

What Patti said goes if you joining in local, or ride in yourself. There are some groups that get preferential starting time because they are associated with the more prominent groups that support the cause.

Some groups come in from surrounding states, and I think this is likely the invite you have. I have a friend in Normalville PA who was the a Chapter President and they would come in on Friday or Saturday to get ready. The big ride is the ones who start from California every year and is call "Ride to the Wall". I've spoke with some who have participated in "Ride to the Wall" and it's not for me. The group is just too big and every aspect of the ride is planned out. Again, it's to support a cause, not a sightseeing trip.

Someone at the Rolling Thunder facebook page estimates that 900K bikes were present at last year's event.
