Check your crank lately?
The one in your bike? Just resist. Don't do it.
.0075" out here. Dang it. |

I started my diagnostic tear down yesterday. Got the Cams, oil pump, heads, cylinders and pistons out. The oil pump is toast. Everything inside was scored or pitted from whatever went through it. Pistons have a good deal of carbon on top, specially the rear. Rings appear in tact, don't look like they got hot. Some shadows in the cylinders, but no significant vertical scoring. Crank appears to be good thus far. Not binding when I spin it by hand in the six places I checked. Still have to tear down and check all the bearings, bushings and flush the ports. No failures with the valves, lifters, pushrods or rockers.

Was real lucky with my Deluxe. When The Wizard checked it before starting my 95" build, it was just under .002

The main housing of my oil pump showed scoring and slight galling. Didn't even bother to look at the gerotors. All that stuff is sitting in a box in my shop. Crank had to be disassembled (un-welded), crank pin and rod bearings replaced, then rebalanced and rewelded. Runout is now .001 at it's worst point. It's runout was less than .002 just after the oil pump grenaded. Oil pump end had to be polished, too, as there was discoloration, but no scoring, on that end. It cost me $450 to have Darkhorse rebuild the crank. New stocker is $1100-ish, S&S more. Engine builder found non-magnetic debris in the oil pan, so all the engine internals, oil cooler and all the other junk that oil passes through got a super thorough cleaning. My cylinders were slightly scored, enough to merit an overbore. Rear cylinder was worse. You could feel the grooves with your fingernail. Heads got new valve guides and valves as two guides were pretty sloppy. All four were replaced with bronze guides. Valves are stock replacement. So, my advice to you is to drop the pan and see what's inside. Hope the damage ain't as bad as what I saw with mine.

All the best to you both!!
These scoots are starting to piss me off, I'm still on ESP and will probably get another term as this one is coming up on expiry. If it wasn't for Autumn refusing to be seen on a KTM Adventure R, thats what would be sitting in the garage right now. Went to wish the boys happy new year yesterday and the amount of bikes in the back with scissored cranks was shocking...... Dirk |

With the lower end still assembled, and the primary still attached, I put the bike in neutral and rotated the crank by hand. Looking for any points where the rods were not easily moved for/aft. Checked this at numerous points of rotation. Never did I feel any tightness. Crank measured runout was .006.

Only thing I know now is something went through the motor on my way home from Texas when I was coming through eastern Kentucky about 2:00 am. By the time I got home and rode it over to a friends shop the knocking was much worse. When I got home pulled the oil drain plug and found metal pieces on the plug magnet. Not saying this was the cause, but I was just a tad hard on the bike the way I was riding in the hill country, and then again when in the hills of northern Arkansas on the way home with Mikey and Bob.

Of course, if I end up going crate, that would resolve the "Clean" issue too.

Nothing is likely to happen soon. I'd love to be riding, but been busy with work and doesn't look like I'm likely to have a slow period this winter.
Always welcome, but might as well wait for warmer weather to come east. The good roads are not much fun in the winter with sand/salt everywhere.
