Question about doorways??
I'm tearing out the doorway that goes into the basement. Directly above this is the stairway going upstairs...the issue is this, I'm wondering if I can take out the jack studs? I want the doorway to be flush with the wall. I am confused though because the door header is supposed to be on top of the jack studs and it's not. The jack studs run right up the wall with the king studs and the header is just kinda nailed into the ceiling it rests on nothing...can anyone help me???????

Typically, the header is end nailed through the king studs and sits on the jack studs (we call 'em queen studs here... go figure)...
Sometimes a header or cripple wall is installed above a non-bearing door opening to facilitate the mounting of the head jamb.... If this is the case, it all can come out. Can you take a few pictures? I be a general contractor and generally nice guy... |

Don't you dare take that header out until you know for sure what you are dealing with...
or at least have Ed do it... If its bearing, we only lose him... |

The header isn't supporting anything it isn't even sitting on top of the jack/queen stud. It's just screwed to the ceiling.

Tonya used to avail herself of such assistance before the key incident...

Probably non-bearing then, but I've seen some idiots merely end nail the header to the king studs and not use jack studs... an idiot might then screw the header to the joists to make up for their stupidity... Are the joists lapped over the header, how long are the joists and what are they resting on/holding up? What is the joist dimension/spacing? Is there a second story or an attic? Do you have a ceiling frame or trusses? |
