Need forward control help NOW (Softail)
For Trackstar55.
Left side went on no sweat. Right side, he's got a head just about stripped out (torx) and 2 more bolts to go after that removing the originals ()He's installing AN 3" extended). I told him heat on all 3, and if he strips out the head on the one that's about to go, loosen the other 2 and drill the head off the 3rd one and grind flats, then heat and use an open end wrench on the flats. Anything easier from you guys? PM me and I'll send his Ph # if you have better ideas.

I don't have anything easier. Sounds like good advice to me. Not too much heat though. 30 seconds or so.
How's the socket. if the flanges are bent he'll just keep stripping the heads. |

I didn't think of the wrench being trashed, but it is. Thanks Terry!

I also can't find the parts manual, but can he heat the stubborn bolt and grab it with vise-grips? I thought they were regular socket heads.

Buy a reverse drill bit and an easy out. That usually works.

As I recall from doing this on mine, they're tight and locktited too. Heat would probably work just fine, but I used a hand impact to break mine.
I think you'd snap an eazy-out before you moved the bolt.

He got one bolt out, is going for the second undamaged one now.
His dad is an ex-tractor-pull guy and is going to try an EZ out on the damaged one. There seems to be an art to using those (one that I've never mastered), so here's hoping.

Let us know how it goes. He's drilling off the head and removing the plate before easy-outing it isn't he? It may come out then with just vise grips.

Rap it with a hammer first before trying the the extractor.

Hand impact was a good idea for the ones with good heads. For the one with the stripped out head, drilling off the head may release the tension on the threads and with a little heat and some vice grips, it may just come out.
I am with you Mega, never could get an EZ out to work. I have had to drill out the center of the bolt, crush it to pull it away from the threads and get it out. Then run a tap in the hole to clean up the threads. |

All done!
Thanks to all for the help, and his dad got the one with the stripped head out with the EZ Out. It's a black art, that is...
