Buell 1125R

It was the last thing I expected today. I had spotted these bikes on the floor on Saturday, and joked with the salesman about a test ride. He hasn't even been able to take one out yet.

Well, I was at the dealership gettin a new back tire on my Ulysses, drooling over the bike when Sam Jr., the owner struck up a conversation with me about it. He's ordered one specifically for himself, but still hasn't gotten to ride one yet.

Well, my bike was ready, and I paid the service manager, thanked everybody, and headed out the door. I zipped up my jacket, strapped on my helmet and donned my gloves. I threw my leg over by Buell and fired it up.

"Hey!" Jr. yells for me. "Wanna take it for a spin?"

Does a bear sh!t in the woods?

Three minutes later, I was on the 1125R.

Buell has gone and contracted with Rotax to build this V-twin 1125cc water cooled motor, and the joint venture has just plain worked in this bike.

The bike is definetly a sport/track bike, but the driveability is unmatched by anything I've ever ridden. Power is constant throughout the rev range (I by no means wound out the motor, but at 8000 RPM, the motor was pulling hard with no end in sight) with a red line of 10,500 RPMs. This bike was definetly different from any other sport bike I've ridden. Where an import bike starts to kick into it's power range above usually 6-7000 RPMs, the 1125R has been pulling from 2000 RPMs. And that makes the bike decievingly fast. 60 in first, and it then felt like I needed to shift. I short shifted 3rd at 80, and ran through the gears from there, just to click through them. One 20 five. It got there quick.

Now, I wasn't flogging this bike by any means. There was plenty more left when I let off the throttle and dabbed the front brakes for my exit. Oh, the brakes worked like those on any of the ther Buell models. The back brake was a little wooden, but the front more than made up for the lacking rear. Buell's front brake is unmatched in the industry if you ask me.

I took my exit from the freeway, then quickly jumped back on, this time going southbound. The on ramp was too much fun, having the bike leaned way, way over, tracking true throughout the corner, with speeds in excess of 80. I merged back onto the freeway, and looked down at the speedo. 1 thirty 2.

This bike can definetly get one into plenty of trouble. I wasn't leaned over in a sport bike croutch, nor was I beating the motor to see how fast I could get it to go. I was simply rolling on the throttle, enjoying the constant pull of this Rotax designed engine.

I again dabbed the brakes and quickly slowed for my approaching exit. Once again, the bike leaned in effortlessly, and rode like it was on rails around the turn. I made a quick left and headed back to the dealership.

Oh, what the hell, I down shifted and twisted the wick. My ass quickly slid back on the seat, my body straighted right up and the grin touched my ears. This thing is QUICK! No matter what gear, what RPM, or what speed, this bike just goes. It's one of the easiest sport bike's I've ever ridden, with no "power band" that comes on instantly, instead linear power throughout the range.

Buell and Rotax got this one right.

Oh, and I hated the look of the bike in the pictures I've seen, but in person, this bike looks awesome.

I hope it doesn't have a memory for top speed.

Damn! Sounds very nice indeed. I am very glad to see these guys get the power they need to really compete in the sport bike classes.

Thanks for the write up!

I know enough to stay away from those kinds of bikes. I would be in way too much trouble.

Nice write up, I have a friend that will be very interested in this.

The sound: Different.

The V-Twin exhausts through Buell's usual under bike canister, with a double outlet on the muffler that runs the entire underbelly of the bike. When started, the bike sounds, well, unusual. But when you twist it up, it sounds like it just wants to be kept on pushed. It's a low murmer when started that turns into a nice growl when pushed.
