Abrasive.

Oh, and some extra aluminum. Again, abrasive contaminant. There's a lot of Al in the Earths crust.
My bike and my truck(500hp. modifed PowerStroke that pulls a LOT of air) both run K&N filters, both get the oil changed at the Mfg. recommended interval and have the oil tested, absolutely No abnormal wear or metal or silica present. If you oil a gauze filter correctly they work very well.

Agreed.

Since I don't ride at WOT throttle too often and my stock intake valve is relatively tiny the stock element might work fine. The stock airbox is the major restrictor on a stock intake.

I've been looking at the V&H Drak air cleaner because I think it looks cool.

I like that one too, but having the stock football cover fools people into thinking it's close too stock.

Yes they do. And oiling it correctly helps you get good results.

I've run them in all kinds of stuff since 1976. I like them a lot.

Russ's comment gives me pause.

Wonder if K&N make a filter for the Ventilator?

Nope, neither does Amsoil.

Rumor on another forum is that K&N will have an element for the Ventilator early next year.

Well, on the way home from Kentucky a few days ago, I had the bright idea of feeling of the air that enters my Vance and Hines DRAK air cleaner (with K&N element).

V&H DRAK

The DRAK has a screen in the front which allows un-heated air to flow into the element. Seemed like good thing. I know that cooler air is more dense and thus carries more oxygen which creates more power per volume than hot air. The DRAK also has a mmodified teardrop shape that makes it longer behind the filter element.

So with nothing else to do as the miles went under the wheels, I felt of the air temperature as it was being sucked in (with my right hand) at 70 mph. Could stick my fingers inside the cleaner behind the cover. As expected the air entering the front of the air cleaner was at ambient temperature. But, surprisingly, the air being sucked into the rear part of the air cleaner was HOT! Hot enough that I didn't want to leave my fingers behind the cover for very long at a time.

Hmmmmm.

Then, I opened the louvers on the fairing lowers and did my calibrated finger thermometer test again. This time, the air entering the air cleaner behind the filter element was warm, but not hot. It was a significant difference.

Dunno how much difference the heated air makes, but I think I'll keep the fairing lowers' louvers open from now on (in the Spring, Summer, Fall). I think I'll do a TTS data collection and record IAT under the two conditions to get some empirical data.

By the way, the airflow data for filters is collected using clean/fresh filter elements. When they gather dust, they degrade substantially. Think of your home air conditioning system with a dirty filter.

Ken

I get that with my EVO....It is supposed to having a passing resemblance to a 1962 FL.

I'll get asked at rides if it is a 61 or 62...I tell them to look at the motor, for one, and tell me.
Answers vary, but they are all interesting.
