How to waste a whole day....

I think I mentioned that one of the receipts that came w/ the bike stated that the inner was a POS and would always leak. So, I figured I'd dig into it this morning. How hard can it be to swap an inner primary?

First thing, I thought I had a 4spd jam bar, but it was a 5spd--off to the store for some bar stock to make one, and a few other odds an ends to seal up the primary.

OK, jam bar in place, 3/4" breaker bar and socket ready--won't budge. Heat. Won't budge. More heat; socket slips. Dig through son's tool box for flat-faced 6pt impact socket. Crap, it's 1" drive; off to the store for a drive adapter. OK, all ready again; pull. Pull some more. Heat. Pull. More heat, and a 5' pipe. Left nut hits floor as jam bar bends like a tootsie roll.

Broke out the impact. Holy shit was that thing on tight. From the marks on the rotor, it looks like the last person in there used the new twin cam tightening procedure. 600 ft lb IR driver had to work to move it. Plenty o freakin' loctite too. Clutch came off easy enough. Oil leak at the motor end was due to the o-ring being pinched during installation.

Ok, moving along. The mainshaft support bearing was pointed out on that same receipt as being loose in its bore. Here's a short video of "loose".

Got a replacement inner from a guy on another forum. Had to drill out a broken screw at the solenoid, but otherwise it looks like it will work out just fine. I do need to find a double-sealed R-16 bearing, though. The one parts house in town that had one wanted $41 for it. I found that a bit ironic.

It's supposed to be a 1 X 2 X .375 bearing, and it mic'd at 2.000 OD. The bore in the primary is 2.010. There was also a lot of gray RTV in there--like that would hold it.

I find most videos of "loose" a bit more stimulating than that one.
Motion seemed right, but the sounds were all wrong...

I've bailed on ridin' with him two years in a row now.

It'll be pretty much like normal, at least for the first couple legs.

If you let that develop and it drives you to do something crazy enough in public,
you could get a movie deal.

We could all do cameos and the collective could get a cut on royalties.

That's just one way it could go. There are probably other possibilities...

There are no bell towers nearby. Would a water tower suffice?
