Baisley Spring Installation
BigMike sent me a Baisley Spring and, his own personal installation kit, while we were in Eureka Springs. We didn't get a chance to install it there, so I put it in tonight.
First, you need to remove the right footboard and right exhaust. Put a pan under the cam chest before removing the cover, as a few ounces of oil will leak out. A roll pin holds the spring in place in the bottom left side of the cam plate. If you have cam chains, they'll have to be removed. I have gears, so it was a moot point. Place a rag in the bottom of the cam chest, so the pin doesn't end up lost in the engine when it comes out the back side. Use an 1/8" punch and light hammer to tap out the roll pin. Remove the old spring with a small screwdriver. Notice the old spring on the left is a tad shorter, weaker and has less coils than the Baisley Spring. Start the roll pin, (Mike sent me a new one) in the hole. Insert the new spring back in the opening and depress it with a screwdriver while tapping the roll pin in. Remove the screwdriver and use the punch to tap the pin through the other side. You can feel it on the back side with your finger. Clean the surfaces before reinstalling the gasket and cover. The tech that built my engine had used gasket sealant on the engine side and the old gasket came off in pieces. I had to scrape the surface to get the old gasket off. Mike had sent some Knob Creek gasket remover, but it somehow got...er...lost. Put the cover back on with a new gasket and tighten following the torque pattern..per Mike's excellent drawing. Reinstall the exhaust and footboard and you're done. I replaced the header gasket. Mike had sent me a Screamin' Eagle gasket, but I had a new stock one and used it. |

Manual I think it wrong on torque values for cover. Lots of them end up cracking, I think. I hope I pencilled that in my manual. Haven't looked at new one to see of they changed it.

Good job Grey. You want to come over and help me replace my drive belt.

Haven't ridden it yet. Finished up around 10:30 last night and came in the house.
I'll head out on it here in a few hours. |

It appears Gray's bike was upright for the install.
It's just as easy or easier to do it on the kick stand. Also, little to no oil loss so no mess. Make sure the spring is compressed enough for the roll pin to get by. Don't ask me how I know! |

It was on the kickstand. I made sure the spring was compressed..sounds like you have an interesting story, Steve.
Just got back from a ride and there seems to be a small difference in noise, but I have to have more pressure. Don't have a pressure gauge, for comparison. We're putting new lifters in flhpi-ohio's Road King Thursday night. I'll see what that does for him. I've read that they sometimes need replaced around 30K miles and we're both there. |

Don't kid yourself. It would take me 8 hours to drive down there. So think twice.

I've never adjusted valves on a twinkie...shovels were easy. And BTW, thanks again Mike, for the spring and accessories. |

I was referring to adjusting the adjustable pushrods. In essence, you really are adjusting the valves.
What's the procedure with the adjustables? |
